Default Turbocharged 2.5L Nomenclature

Here is a VIN plaque from a North American 2004 WRX STi (thanks to Jaxx):

If a WRX sedan is a GDA and a WRX wagon is a GGA, then the North American WRX STi should be called a GDF. And if the WRX engine is called the EJ205, then the North American WRX STi engine should be called the EJ257.

Here is a VIN plate from a North American 2004 Forester XT:

So, the shorthand to refer to a North American Forester XT is SG9 and the shorthand engine reference is EJ255.

And, although never discussed in this forum, the normally aspirated 2.5L engine is known a the EJ251.

That makes pefect sense, good post.

Wrx=ej205
2.0L Sti -ej207
Forester turbo = ej255
2.5L Sti =ej257

I wonder what the internals on the forester are like? How similar is it to the Sti motor? Know one knows yet I think huh..

No. The original 2.5 (DOHC) is called EJ25D. It was followed in '99 by the EJ253. The SOHC 2.5L engine in 2000 and later Imprezas is the EJ251.

I doubt it. I think only changes within the short block or heads merit a new engine type code.

On a related note, I found out today that the new 2.5L "Low Emissions" engine found in any 2004 Legacy/Outback sold in California or the North East has an engine type code of EJ259.

can you find out easily if an engine is either a 96-98 EJ20G OR EJ20K with or without the engine VIN... and can you fit a 6S ECU on an EJ20G motor?
