Default How strong is the stock gearbox?

From the latest Pat Richard press release:

Quote:
This year Patrick and the Subaru Rally Team Canada are hoping to set a blistering pace with their Open Class 2004 Impreza WRX STi. However the team has decided to replace the racing-style dog box with a standard STi gearbox. The standard gearbox is about a second per kilometer slower but is basically
bullet proof.

"Despite being slower, the standard gearbox has always been more reliable for me and with a more reliable car I'm going to be able to push that much harder for the win" said Patrick.

There is also a blurb in an old SCC (I'll post the issue and page number when I get home) that said the first ProRally open class cars after the WRC version was brought over two years ago for two races used the Subaru 6 speed.

Prodrive said when they looked at the stock gearbox they thought it was one of the best transmissions they had ever seen. Also, they mentioned that they were running at about 380bhp with it and that they could safely go a fair bit higher with the tranny.

I'll quote the article when I get it in front of me.

Because it was designed in the late 70's for cars with 60hp.

Because it wasn't 'over-designed' by Porsche Ag as was the 6-speed.
