Does the STI weigh less than the EVO?

I watched Car and Driver's video: STI v. EVO. Fueled up and ready to go, one driver claimed that the STI and EVO weighed exactly the same amount. If I am not mistaken, the STI has a greater fuel capacity than the EVO. The EVO holds 14 US gallons while the STI holds 15.9. If so, then when filled up, the STI holds more gas than the EVO such that when both cars hold the same amount of fuel the STI weighs slightly less.

Maybe not a significant difference, but if Car and Driver is correct--filled up both cars are equal weight--the STI is lighter. Just wanted to clarify the record using simple mathematics.

Anyway, 1 gallon of gas weighs 6.12 lbs. That is an additional 12 lbs. that the STI carries directly over the rear wheels. In racing, 12 lbs. could be the difference between winning and losing. What do you think?

My STI with 4 speakers, head unit, speaker wire, etc. weighed 3220 with low fuel. dont know what evo weighs

You are talking about 12 pounds here, lets put that in perspective. That is .368% of the total vehicle weight.

That is such an incredibly small amount of the overall weight, it makes no differnce to the driveability of the car. In F1 12 pounds would very mich make a difference, but this is a production car, weighing three times as much, being driven primarily on the street, it makes no difference.

I agree that I would choose between two 3000+ pound cars based on 12 pounds, but I wouldn't call it insignificant either. From car to car the 12lbs could be anywhere so you really can't say the lighter car is better. From STi to STi, 12lbs could be considerable, but only to the best of drivers and tuners. Personally, I would like the car as light as I can get it without sacrificing certain things. To date I have removed about 30 lbs I didn't want and exchanged it with 35 lbs of more useful stuff. Next is glove box mod (~ -2 lbs), new battery (~ -10 lbs), UTEC (~ +2lbs), - I/C water sprayer (~ -?). If I could afford it, I'd buy new front seats too (~-30lbs).

I thought I read/heard that with no options on the WRX and the EVO that they indeed weigh exactly the same amount.

I had my STi corner weighted last week. Full fluids (almost full gas tank, full water sprayer), added stereo (JL 300/4 amp under passenger seat, alpine head unit, 6.5" front speakers - no rears or sub), Speedware harness bar, 2 Schroth Profi-III harnesses, extinguisher, camera mount.

No driver: 971 LF, 966 RF, 709 LR, 683 RR.
3331 lbs total. 58.2% front, 49.5% right.

Driver: 1052 LF, 993 RF, 780 LR, 712 RR.
3538 lbs total. 57.8% front, 48.2% right.

Heavy. Most of the mag reviews I've seen have the STi and Evo within a few pounds of each other. Amazingly close weight. For the original poster, if you were that serious about winning and 12 lbs really mattered, you'd be doing various small hp mods, lightweight wheels, different tires, doing lots of little weight removal bits from each car, etc. -- who knows what the result would be between the cars after all that.

One of the best weight savings would be new seats. About 27 pounds of savings each, not to mention being lower in the car (unless you don't want that). The lower driver position would be good for handling probably more than the raw weight savings. I doubt the Evo seats are 42 pounds each like the STi. Realistically, the car is a porker and while less weight is good, even 100 pounds leaves us at over 3100 pounds, which is a far cry from the ~2300 pounds of a light sports car or ~1500 pounds of an open wheel car (less in many cases), or less than 200 pounds for a shifter kart.
