Thumbs up This is getting interesting...

Well, the weather was cooperating today and just too inviting (read: cold), not to go out to the track and see if my 2.5 XT would be any faster than in previous, much warmer, weather. When the tech guy numbered my Forester 55, that's when I knew luck had to be on my side... I staged with a moded Prelude whose occupant and "spectators" looked hungry for a piece of soccer Mom's wagon. That just made it that much more fun...

I told myself that if I break a 14.1 that would be it for the night.

Needless to say, I made one and only one run...

So there you have it. A stock Forester pulling times just shy of Car and Driver's claims. Who woulda thunk?

Here are my previous thread(s) about my 1/4 mile times:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=435251

Just to set the record straight, I have done one "power mod". I removed the intake silencer. Since there seems to be on-going and heated debate on wheter it does nothing, adds a few, or looses 5-10 HP is up to you to factor into this time.

Just to talk some smack in the Proven Power "Bragging" forum: Stock for stock, a Forester 2.5 XT will eat your WRX for lunch any day.

I knew I was going to enjoy this thing the first day I bought it...

- Steve

Nearly 3 seconds quicker to the QM than the other guy - in a tall, square, stodgy all-wheel-drive cargo carrier. How humiliating.

Describe your launch technique?

zzyzx, congratulations man. I had to drop $1000 on a Vishnu Stage zero to get the same results. Props for the run, and props for a good choice. 1.87 is a killer short time, too. You 'da Man!!!

Nice run. I knew those things are capable of running a sub 14 sec. run stock.

with that trap speed the forrestor should pull pretty hard on a stock wrx..

Too much! Can you imagine the Forester on a diet? If that thing was as gutted as Steve's RS...lookout. Of course it still has tons of potential for power mods too.

The thing that strikes me is the transmission used. I assume that the turboed Forester is slightly heavier than a WRX sedan or wagon. It also has a torquier engine. Does it use the exact same 5 speed as the WRX? Are the front and rear diffs the same ratio as the WRX?

Great job Steve! I almost think I'd have more fun in a souped-up turbo Forester than a STi. Now all you need to do is start spanking some EVOs.

Sick! The XT responds well to simple mods too! I was able to kick out a 13.7 @ 97 with just a K&N Panel Filter, Removal of the silencer, IC sprayer, lighter wheels and a stiffer suspension (so you don't have the huge dips and transfer when you shift fast)

Congrats again!

Bry.

According to the spec sheet thing I have, the XT weighs 3210. The manual base models weigh less than the WRX Wagon (only slightly more than the sedan).

Bry,
When you mean lighter wheels is that tires, rims, or both?

Sweet times man. You would have beat my stock WRX. With that trap speed, he would be dead even with a stock WRX from a roll though. Higher they go, my money is on the WRX. Either way, that is awesome man, must be a blast to beat up on unsuspecting victims. That Prelude had a 2.7 60ft time, I think I could run that lol. Take care -KEVIN-

i dont think so...there has not been one stock wrx i know run any better than low 14s...and surely the xt is not running better times because it launches better...i think the real numbers should be around 245 hp and 260 tq

I dont think so either. The forester has much more power then the WRX and it isn't that much heavier. Plus, I have never actually heard of a stock WRX running the 14.2 that C&D says it does, more like 14.5.

What early power mods would be the most effective for the XT?

Does it suffer from a restrictive Y pipe under the intercooler?
Is the exhaust restrictive?
Can WRX downpipes/ catbacks be used?

Those two things would seem to have the biggest potential bang for the buck, if they fit.

Is the turbo on the XT different than the STi? That might be a nice bolt-on since lots of STi guys are swapping in hotter turbos right off the bat.

I've seen a WRX run 14.0 stock. Numerous ones below 14.5. The Forester XT is definitely an impressive car.

I don't want to turn this into an arguement. Based on his timeslip, he is trapping right around where a stock WRX traps. I trapped 93-95 mph when I was bone stock. I am not doubting it is faster that a stock WRX, he already proved that with his 13 sec timeslip. You said though, based on trap speed he will pull on a stock WRX from a roll and my answer is still no because he is trapping the same as a stock WRX. I ran 14.2 bone stock with no cool down straight off the interstate and into the staging lanes. His 1/8 mile times were about .4 faster than mine, saying we both cut the same 60ft, and he pulls .4 tenths in the 1/8 and we stay the same other 1/8 mile would sound just about right because I ran a 14.2. That extra torque helped him out in the 1/8 mile, but the added weight hurt him on the big end compared to a WRX. Hope you understand my logic. Either way the XT is badass and faster than a stock WRX. Take care -KEVIN-

It's the WRX turbo. That said, I think it's perfect since it spools so quickly. Of course, I'm an autox'er, not a drag racer...

In terms of a catback, Cobb's dyno includes their catback numbers and IMO for the money it's not a whole lot of return. It leads me to believe the catback is not very restrictive. However, replacing/removing the cats I'm sure is where you'll really gain some power. This, and a bigger intercooler/better piping would help a great deal.

Regarding the transmission, if you happen to read the Aussie technical PDF (Peaty has it...), you'll note a brief sentence which states that the gears are wider - "to reduce noise". Regardless, wider gears are stronger.

In terms of a launch technique, unlike a WRX, you don't really need one. It's easy to launch, and won't bog after the launch. I probably get up to 6k, then quickly slip the clutch out. I never side-step it or anything quite that drastic. The launch in the Forester is not a pretty thing, lot's of bad noises and wheel hop.

I ran a 14.3@94 bone stock in my wrx with only 1800 miles on it on a 2.0 60 foot. I'm positive they are capable of a 13.9-14.1 bone stock with a good 60 foot and decent shifting on a wrx with about 2500 miles.
