Default Jdm Ej25?

I'm trying to look for info on this engine. I currently have a 98 Legacy GT with a blown engine, but can't afford to do a swap due to current money problem.

I had an USDM EJ25 donor engine and was planning on rebuilding my current one, but ran into a few problems, so that idea is scrapped. My mechanic came across a JDM 2.5L with apprx. 40k and can have it installed for $1500C. It sounds like a great deal, but want to find more info on this.

Can someone provide info for this engine? I've done a search, but couldn't find much info other than someone stating it produces about 167hp(edit), and 170lb torque @ 2800rpm w/avcs. Can someone confirm?

Thanks

eclone,
I have a 2.5 that came from Japan installed in my '98 2.5RS. I used the original intake manifold and ECU, as the JDM engines have different emission systems/sensors. The JDM has no EGR system at all, so it was necessary to plug the journal in the intake manifold. I do get the occasional P0400 code (EGR Flow Malfunction), but it only seems to happen when cruising at a certain RPM range so I try not to cruise at 2400-2500. I have an OBD-II scanner, and erase the code and CEL. I have no idea what vehicle the JDM was in originally, but it's stronger than the original in top end with no plateau up to redline. Also way worse mileage. The JDM also has hydraulic lifters as opposed to the original engines mechanicals. The JDM camshafts and lifters were also visibly beefier in width; I didn't measure the cam profile, unfortunately. I'd be interested in knowing about the avcs, and how the valve timing is controlled. The characteristics of the new engine seem to be consistent with what avcs does, but if it's controlled by the ECU, then I doubt that the original ECU would have it programmed in. Sorry to not give you many answers, but maybe we can get some more input from the board.

hossak,
How long have you had this engine in for? Any problems other than the CEL? Also, will the sensors affect emissions testing? How does it compare to the US 2.5? More low-end torque? Overall?

Also, when you say bad mileage, how bad? What do you get out of a full tank? Also, are they made for higher octane? Maybe that could be a problem. We only have 94 here.

Sorry for all the questions. I still a n00b at all this.

One more thing, spark plugs should be the same right? cuz I had Denso iridium installed just before it blew.

7,000 miles.

No other problems.

Don't know about emissions testing.

No more low end discernable, but the original always seemed to go flat at around 5,500 RPM. JDM keeps pulling at high RPM.

23-24 MPG, mix of highway and mountain roads. Haven't taken any long trips. 320 miles per tank. Been running Mobil 93.

Plugs the same, wires different. The seal end on the valve cover side was a different shape. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure that the wires that fit were Forester spec.

What year is the engine? The AVCS JDM EJ25's are rather new. Heres a site for example that sells the JDM EJ25. We have had a few posts in here talking about that engine, but it has been awhile...

I too have a JDM 2.5 in my ride, it was from a 98', or at least thats what the engine dealer told me. As for the EGR code,...Well it's kinda long story..... The engine I had B4 was the 2.2, and the 2.2 engine doesn't need the EGR componant (so the dealer told me),Soooo, when I put in the 2.5, It not only didn't come with the EGR stuff, but I didn't have it from my last engine. Now comes time to SMOG and I register as a GROSS POLLUTER!! I take it to the dealer and they tell me it's gonna cost $600 bucks for the complete setup, and about $800 bucks for all the Labor....ARRRGGHHH!!!

OH, Well,....to late now, I gotta pay.
Hope that sheds some light on something, I don't know about your smog laws but Cali Sux for smog. As for performance, I LOVE IT!!
