Question TXS Stg 4+ w/UTEC - Engine stalls at speed with clutch in

Greetings all,

I'm trying to figure this out, maybe you can help. As the title says, as I'm driving at speed, put the clutch in, let off the throttle, and the car will stall. Car will idle properly once I restart it. I'm about out of ideas.

- NO check engine light to track down
- I've reset the ECU
- Base TXSstg4FMIC map
- Builds boost fine
- I've replaced the front O2 A/F sensor
- 26K miles

Check this out - This log is from a low boost pull (light throttle)
- any ideas?

The first thing I notice is that it never changes load sites. The load site is "00" all the way through that log even up to 7psi. This is the reason that it never gets out of the 0% TPS column, which goes -4.1 and then switches to -6.6 fuel correction and stays there until you let off the gas and then went back to -4.1 and then stalled.

Have you changed anything in the special constants menu? Which version firmware are you running?I think I'd make sure that it's flashed with v3.1 and also make sure all of the UTEC special constant settings are at default first. Then trouble shoot from there.

Excellent observation. It definately helps having some more eyeballs looking at the log.

I believe I have the latest firmware, but will certainly double check. I went back through the open loop to closed loop steps to check them and they seemed okay. I was thinking about putting the factory TMIC back, and dropping back to an open loop Stg4TMIC map, to try and rule out a cut hose on the FMIC piping somewhere that I can't see.

Oh, that's interesting. You didn't mention the FMIC the first time (yes I know, I saw that you're using that base map).

Go back through all of the connection points on the FMIC plumbing and make sure that they are all sealed well. Actually, a friend showed me recently to use hairspray on the connecting points for vac and boost hoses. It makes it stick and seal really good. Having a leak would cause a problem I would think.

Also, make sure that the defaults are loaded in the special constants as I said before (other than the CLB setting). Also look in the manual and set your TPS to a 100% (it may be a little higher).

You probably will not like this answer but you just can't clutch in at high speed and let the rpms drop down to idle levels with a front mount intercooler.

If this happens you will need to clear your ecu codes or reset your ecu as you will get a "system too lean code." This code will make your car run leaner than intended.

Actually, that's okay - at least I have an idea as to what's going on. I never tripped that CEL code, so I thought it was either the MAF sensor, the idle control solenoid, front o2 sensor or something. (none of which are cheap to replace.)

Out of a quest for knowledge, why does this happen?

Well hopefully it's good for a few more eyeballs on this problem.

To set the record straight it's a "Stage 4 Kit with the Txs FMI option." (As if you didn't know that from the map name.) So, I guess that would be a Stage 4+, technically speaking. Except it's a VF34, so technically it's not really even a stage 4 kit which would come with the vf30. sheesh... semantics.

It has to do with the length of pipe work involved and the dramatic temp change at high speeds while using a front mount.

As with many performance modifications, it is a give and take situation. So just like if you install an upgraded rear swaybar on a WRX, you cannot expect to maintain control if you slam your brakes on mid-turn and with FMI you just can't clutch in to idle at over 50 mph

Why does this occur.. and I"m assuming it's not 50mph but a certain RPM rather? Maybe not but could you explain to me what's actually occurring.. my curiosity has defiatelly gotten the best of me now.

Maybe we could figure this out - let's think about what's happening -

On boost, turbo spooled, some load on the motor, hot compressed air being sent through about 3 feet of I/C piping, cooled 100 deg, another 3 feet of piping, then sent into the intake manifold.

Now, clutch in, no load on the motor, turbo winding down, throttle body closed, RPM's dropping, A/F gauge shows dead lean (lotsa air/little fuel). The timing seems to jump a bit as ECU/UTEC should go into idle (0 load) fueling values.

So we've got lots of air due to the length of FMIC piping, and not much fuel based on engine load, engine stumbles, the UTEC log shows a Injector duty cycle of 0! (i.e., no fuel) And with no fuel the engine cuts off.

I still don't know why.

I figure gas off the blow off will open releasing some pressure.. and the engine speed will determine the amount of air entering the engine...

W/ out the front mount the same fueling occurs of throttle as with it... so the fuel amount here is static.. extra air will not hinder combustion of the given fuel amount in any way.. therefore I would assume that it is not an issue with the engine recieveing extra air as you seemed to be thinking...

but is there an issue where because of the longer piping or and extra cooling the engine is being starved of air? This will obviously stop combustion and thus could trigger a stall/kill.

Seems to be logic but I could not say exactly why it would occur so I really can't support or disprove my own theory.
