Exclamation My temp reading is screwed! What's going on?????

I just installed a downpipe last week and ran the whole week fine, no cel or anything. but this weekend, i finally got time to put my uppipe in, but there's a problem, and i'm not sure what it is.

on my first test drive after i got everything put back together i noticed that the temp reading on the dash was pretty high. i kept driving a little and it shot up, this was just after letting it warm up a few mins at the shop. so, i turned around and drove it back to the shop to get my other car.

the whole time the temp gague was pegged, but there weren't any signs of the car actually overheating. i'm wondering what could be wrong.

at first i thought egt sensor because i put in a vishnu uppipe w/ egt bung, but then i don't know enough about all that. i don't think the egt sensor has anything to do with the temp gague on the dash does it? i thought that that gague measured water temp?

could i have left a coolant line off thereby messing up the coolant flow??? i put the three coolant lines back on the turbo, so i didn't take any others off....***??????

anyway, i am scared to drive it as i just bought it and don't want to fry anything. any help would be appreciated.

just an aside, i have an hks downpipe with the vishnu uppipe.

should i seek professional help? (no, not that kind...)

aaron

I don't know how the egt can affect the coolant temperature. If you left out a coolant line you would have coolant everywhere.

Did you refill for the coolant you lost?

BTW, on the turbo there are 2 coolant lines. The one underneath is an oil line.

You have to 'burp' the cooling system to get the bubbles out...
Do a search on this and there are several methods of doing it...YMMV

i was low on coolant, but i did refill it.

i sure thought that line on the bottom was the coolant line. hmmm. anyway, i was so tired i just put it back on. lol.

i'm not sure what they all do, but i made sure to put them all back.

i'll look for the burping of the cooling system.

and i don't know how the egt could affect the coolent temp either. but i figured it could be sending a false reading.

anyone else got any good ideas?

I'm still trying to figure out why you removed coolant lines to install a downpipe.

Get the air out of your cooling system. Pop the cap off with the engine cold, start the car and idle it for 5-10 minutes, add coolant as necessary as it goes down from the air removed.

If you touched your cooling system and you are now overheating, you have air in it. It's not something that needs further ideas. Uncle Scotty is right.

i think you missed a part of my post.

i did the downpipe a week ago. this weekend, i did the uppipe. and rather than jacking the engine up, i opted to yoink the turbo out instead, hence the removal of te coolant lines.

and i searched and found some threads on burping the coolant system and they said to do what you say. but i tried it that way and it didn't work.

i did it another way after a couple mins of trial and error. here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...26#post5701326

and i'm glad it was just that. i was $hi++ing a brick because i thought "aaron, you're a moron. you screwed up your brand new car"

but then the logic kicked in and i remembered that i'm not *that* stupid.
