All done! WRX powered Vanagon!
Here it is, all done. So far it's been awesome! 700 miles to date and no issues. The power of the WRX engine is incredible. I'm running a flex up pipe, my custom downpipe (catless) into a free flow 911 muffler, it's real quiet btw, and a cold air intake.
The turbo seems to make a bit more noise than I'm used to in a turbo charged car. It might be my intake though.

Nice
What are you going to do about the intercooler? Perhaps make it an air/water intercooler?

That is almost as cool as the link someone posted to a newer one with a 911 engine of some sort. The thing looked like it was going to tip on every corner but it just rocked! Well done with your ride. Nice to see something so unique.

Thanks for the all the compliments! It was easier than it looks to do. I have to say that I now have way more respect for Subaru.
The last subaru I worked on was in HS auto shop back in 1982. I'm tempted to get a WRX now! I'm just wondering how much power the 4WD drivetrain soaks up. To give you an idea of the difference between the stock VW engine and the WRX, VW = 95 hp top speed of 90 mph @ redline of 5200 rpm's, the WRX = 227 hp (maybe more) top speed so far was 120mph @ 6850 rpm... there's a little more there, I just ran out of road... |

Hahaha, that's bada$$. I love practical sleepers like this.
I can't tell from the photo or my hazy memory of the Vanagon how the intercooler gets any airflow. Would an air-water unit not work better? |

lol, this is sweet. Nicely done. I agree that you need ditch that air/air IC and get air/water intercooler. Its going to be the only way that you can effectively cool your intake charge. I think the only thing that IC is doing right now is acting as a charge heater, since its trapped in the engine bay w/ no air flow. Look into an older turbo legacy air/water setup. You can get these setups from Australia or Japan for pretty cheap.

Nice
Is this a Small Car conversion?
They also do a sweet EG33 conversion on Vanagons including the Synchro AWD versions. Todd |

small car
I did it with the help of Smallcar. They did my wiring harness and supplied a power steering hose and the throttle cable. Everything else was my own...
Brian at Smallcar does do a very nice job on the conversions that I've seen. I'm trying to figure out my IC temps right now, after putting the engine through some high rpms and really trying to get it hot, I can still touch the IC, and it feels barely warm. I will put a thermometer on it to see what kind of temps I read at different times... Keep you posted... |

I was reading about this one van with the svx engine in it. The guy would go out and race the local ricers on occasion and beat them pretty bad. Kinda funny and sick at the same time.

I built this little sleeper years ago. She started life with an 800cc triple and ended up with a 2.8l Ford V6 and slushbox shoehorned into her. Used to sneak around real quiet like and then tear up the kiddies with their riced out Civics etc

Had fun with a Jaguar XK convert today, the guy floored it on the on-ramp with me behind him... I never was more than a car length away all the way to 100 when he moved over to let me by...
And I had my 14' kayak on the roof! |

It's too bad you're sitting just too high to see the look of horror in the rearview mirror as they realize that you're still there and will not be left behind as intended
