I personally think that http://www.petitiononline.com/txplate/ is a little better of a site

I just signed it, and now there are 2,902 signatures, I wonder how many would be needed for TX legislature to change the law? That would be so awesome if front plates were no longer required. (Not that I have mine on anyway)

No offense or anything.... but the petition's reasons for getting rid of the front plate do not out weigh the reason (law enforcement) for the front plate being there. Law makers do not care about minor collisions or collector cars or even aerodynamics... there would have to be a reaosn beneficial to THEM for it to pass.... maybe a study about fuel consumption with and without the front plate...

I think that there is no justified reason TO have the plates in the first place. Like was mentioned, there is no "criminal justice" help provided by having a front plate, so the extra identification is not necessary to make Texas a safer place.

The MAIN reason, and Im pretty sure about this from speaking to many in the past... is that imagine there are 2,000,000 cars in texas. If the company that makes the coatings/paint for license plates (3M) makes $1 from each plate in coating sales, thats $4,000,000 per year for Texas plates.

If we get the front license plate repealed, then that cuts their profits by 50% to only $2,000,000. 3M lobbies heavily to keep this law in place, since it is attacked constantly...thus they keep getting paid.

The law would be easily repealed if people actually get together in numbers and stand up for themselves (and other sheep too scared to do anything but whimper).

Look at helmet laws. Those are almost on par with wearing a seat belt in your car. Motorcyclists fought and got that law repealed, and now you can ride your motorcycle (if you choose) withOUT a helmet. There are some specifics to that freedom, but fwiw, cops dont mess with adults without helmets.

A plate is simply that...a plate. No safety function, no asthetic function...just a hinderance with no function other than to cost money/make money for corporations.

This can be fought, and won. It will take more than a petition to win, but it is a good start to determine who's backing you up.

There is GREAT power in numbers here on Nasioc. Look at that member roster!

Nice attitude. I guess you live in Houston now, but are FROM New York Typical

The depth or significance of the victory is obviously not a concern to you...However, its a matter of freedoms and rights...and defending them. If you dont do motorcycles, or have a problem with revenuers telling you that you HAVE to wear a helmet to ride YOUR motorcycle...then dont add your damned rolleyes to this thread.

You are obviously one of the sheep in this society that are cool letting the governments "make our lives better" for us. Are you going to "rolleyes" when the Gov decides that you cant change your exhaust on your car anymore? Stromung in the trash... It can happen VERY easily, and its not all that unlikely that there are bleeding-heart lobbyers trying for legislation like that right now.

So before you go and make some snide remark in a thread that obviously isnt your thing...think twice and try to come out on top NOT looking like a total ass.

Thanks a bunch peter. mmmmkay

Hey, hey -- didn't mean anything personal, and didn't mean the rolleyes to come off as critically as it seemed. I'm just trying to present a friendly diversity of opinions, right?

Just from my perspective, there is a very fine line between a paternalistic government (which I favor) and that of an unfair totalitarian one. Obviously it depends on the constant vigilance of its citizens and the line itself isn't fixed, but moves as a function of societal values and norms.

re: helmet laws: I can understand the whole freedom to choose argument, and I bet a good amount of people advocating the freedom of choice probably still wear their helmets and armor just because it's the smart thing to do. Just from my economics of law perspective -- individuals are very poor at assessing risk. Because of the information asymmetries, it leads to economic inefficiency (i.e. people dying when they shouldn't in this case). However, in theory, institutions and such (government, business) do have the ability to assess risk better, and so if they bear the responsibility of managing risk, there is greater economic efficiency. -- If you'd like to discuss this a little more, I'd be happy to try and better present my side

Hopefully no toes broken

me too me too... Dammit..I hate late night crazy-head replies.

Anyway... I get what you're saying, and I too apologize for unleashing the wrath on your post.

I "fought" for no-helmet laws, and being an ex-paramedic I NEVER rode (well, maybe the 30-40mph roll around the neighborhood) without at least my helmet...and was fully "done" when riding on the weekends, etc. I just figured it wasnt the governments place to tell us we HAD to wear one just because of some health cost issue. It was lame. If they really thought that...they could save trillions by banning smoking (please...no pro-smoker retort...it was just an analogy...besides, smoke affect others, as a helmet is only affecting a rider)

Digress... I guess it all comes down to individual beliefs, and even with the majority in this world moving together like a little herd...there is still independent thought, its just a lot more quelled nowadays than it should be. I give the government full power to do studies, spend billions on it, and TELL me something is dangerous and could get me killed or FUBAR, but I dont give them ANY grounds to tell me that I CANT do something because it could hurt or kill me. Its yours and my decision to make that judgement and should be taken accordingly. Take your best swing Darwin!!!

Again, sorry for blasting off a 150% reply like an ass...my toes are fine. Yours?

we need to keep this one at the top of the Texas forum list so everyone may see it. I am glad to see i'm not the only one who disapproves the front plate.

start a grass roots rebellion, stop using your front plate - i haven't had one on the car since i bought it and refuse to put one on, i have never been pulled over.... i'm sure it'll happen one day but saving 2million dollars won't do jack, 3m will line the pockets of lawyers for 10 times that before they let this law pass.

As for the helmet law fiasco... I say its darwinian theory at its finest. Ride a bike w/o a helmet and you get what's coming to you. As for seatbelts, everyone in any car I'm in will be buckled up. Last thing I want is a 70 MPH bonehead (pun intended) ricocheting around the cabin taking out the responsible occupants.
