Question Fitment Issue: KYB AGX's on a 2004 WRX

Well basically I bought the 04 specific springs and used the or strut tops. I have been getting a nasty rattling from the rear that I have to this time attributed to the springs being too short. Recently I have heard that the piston top on the AGX's is smaller that the top of the '04 struts. Therefore, the whole is the strut top is larger and the agx may be too small causing the rattle. I'm not sure if the AGX were meant to be used on the 04 strut tops.

Does anyone else think that this may be the problem? I'm really at wit's end, the only other possibilities are the lack of coil insulators that should have come with the kit...but this sounds like a heavy rattle/clunk rather than an creak or metal-on metal.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated...

Lonnie

I would imagine the problem rests with the fact that there is no 04 model specific AGX as of yet.

Does that mean that they will not fit an 04'...was was trying to find out if there was anyone else out there w/ this problem.

What I really mean is is what I said above about the piston and the 04 strut tops true. I have emailed KYB, but I have yet to hear from them.

the AGX's are made for 02-03's which have different rear strut tops. You might want to see if you can find some rear tops and put them on and see if that fixes your problem

I've heard that you only need strut tops if you're gonna use 02-03 springs...you'll be fine with the agx's

That's what I thought too, only strut tops if use 02-3 springs...but I've noticed that KYB doesn't list any availible AGX's for 04 wrx's...so what could the reason be. The only difference is the strut top..

I'm curious if anyone has actually done this install, and not had a rattle or clunk from the rear, b/c I'm actually contemplating changing both my strut top and springs...based upon what I heard about the difference in piston diameter on the strut b/w the AGX and 04 stock.

Bump...any input from vendors etc., I spoke w/ gruppe-s and they said the strut tophat had a slightly larger hole allowing for movement..

I recently installed some 04 STi hats/STi V8 Pink Springs on V7 struts. the V7 struts are 02/03 specific while the V8 stuff is for the 04's. The V7 struts were quiet when paired with the original V7 RA springs/hats. But started clunking with the V7 strut/04 hat/pinks combo in the right rear. We had the car up and I had a jack underneath the hub of the right rear. As I jacked the hub up I heard the clunk! I looked in there and as I would jack the suspension up the piston seemed to slide up the hat a good 1/2"-3/4" making the clunking noise.

I haven't had the opportunity to compare 04 and 02/03 rear struts. but what you are saying about the piston being machined different at the threaded portion might be correct. Its as if, despite tightening the hat as much as possible, the V7 threaded portion would not allow the 04 hat to seat all the way down. On installing this I didn't notice any play or looseness, probably due to the spring pressing against the hat. But it was obvious when it was unloaded and i jacked it up.

I am thinking this could be my problem...I am currently in the process of procuring 03 strut tops and 03 springs...

I'll see if this remedies the problems...

KYB has not come out with an AGX for the '04 model yet .... the piston diameter is larger on an '04 model than the '03

The KYB piston however is larger than the piston on the stockers to begin with... So how does that wash with this? Also wouldn't any car running '02/03 specific struts run into this problem running '04 top hats and springs? At our shop we've installed several sets of Eibachs and '02/03 AGXs in '04s and no such problems, only on the Tanabee Springs which are significantly shorter than what is called for on the KYBs.

Mike- this is exactly the question I was considering posting. How many people have had knocking or fitment issues with 02/03 struts (OEM and STi) and 04 hats and springs? I haven't had a chance to compare the V7/V8 struts so I can't say for sure that the threads/piston shape is different.

aww crap. Can it safely be assumed that the Koni's for the 02-03 cannot be used with the stock 04 strut tops too?

I'm thinking that if any aftermarket shock was made to fit the 02-03, it cannot be used with the stock hardware on an 04.

I'm running kyb agx's on an 04 wagon with tein s tech sedan springs, and 04 sti uppermounts. I get no rattling or creaking what so ever.

I know this might be stupid, but you didn't forget to put the rubber padding on, at the shock perch did you?

don't get in a panic yet! i haven't and i don't know of anyone else who has actually compared the threaded section of the different years' struts. many people have put 04 hats/springs on 02/03 struts and have had no issues yet.

Well, I think I will be swaping 03 tops and 03 spring for my 04 tops and springs this weekend. I will be using the exact same brand ans model of spring, only the 03 config. While everything is off, I'm sure we'll take a long look at it. I'm even gonna bring along my stockers to make the comparison.

will let u know monday.

I have AGX's and '04 Tein H-Tech springs on my '04 WRX. I compared the struts (sorry, no pics) and there were basically no discernable differences, so I installed them. I have about 1K miles on them to date with absolutely no problems.

I guess I'm just lucky or something.

EDIT: I used the '04 strut tops too.
