Question stg4 wrx 1/4 mile slip - I can't launch

Well, blasting down the 1/4 mile sure is fun, but a hell of a lot more challenging than I thought it would be! I took it way too easy on the launch control and my times sure reflected that. I'd build 4-5 psi @ 5300 rpm, slip clutch a tad, chirp tires and BOG badly down to ~2500 rpm. See the utec log below...

I'm car #29 - the other car is a stock wrx.

Temperature was 26-27 degrees celcius & was humid. No one seemed to be running good times/traps. A SRT-4 with exhaust/boost controller ran low 14s @ 99. He claimed he ran 13.6 @ 106 a few weeks back when it was colder.

mods:

Ion Stage 3 OE turbo (Garrett hybrid)
UR 600cc injectors
Walbro GS342 fuel pump
Ion 3" catless turboback /w 2 resonators
PDE uppipe
IC water sprayer
stock TMIC
AVC-R boost controller
UTEC - self tuned for 94 octane
and a small exhaust leak :P

So, if I'd raise my launch control a few hundred rpms up, I'm guessing I could avoid bogging at the expense of possibly grenading my tranny... heh fun!

Here's the log of the run:

Is it possible to not use the UTEC launch control?? Doing it yourself would possibly net better times... that is quite the horrible ET but a nice trap. Practiceł I guess!

I could have raised the launch control to say 5800 rpm, but I believe it was me just chickening out a bit (if you look at my utec log, it shows I didn't go WOT while using launch control - I was at ~70% TPS). I could turn it off, but I'd really have to launch at a higher rpm. You're right, I need practice and ballz

The Ion was part of a package deal, alone, it would be about $1100-1200. Prices may have changed though.

I'll post more data and some power graphs of the Ion in a bit.

edit:
Posted power graphs with different timing maps here:

I know how you feel Rick, last time I was at Napierville trying LC I finally said screw it and went WOT using LC for a launch.

I got my best run of the night, 13.9 @ 97.5 mph

I'm sure my tranny hates me now...bah, I don't care..I hate her more

LOL Sam!
You must have pulled a 1.8 60' or so on that launch - good stuff, show her who's boss

it's not just the launch, looks like slow shifting too

Kitbar: true, the 1st-2nd gear change is a toughy to nail right - I spent about 3/5ths of a sec on that shift. The rest of them are relatively quick (2/5ths on 2nd-3rd and 1/5th on 3rd-4th). I'm pulling that data from the log (every tick is 1/5th of a sec, LCM means I've engaged the clutch).
If I try to speed up the 1st-2nd shift too much, I end up crunching the synchros. grrr

Just use the launch control and slip the clutch out of the whole. Go with the feeling of the car.

The past couple of times I went to the track, I've been using LC successfully without too much harm on the drivetrain. It is very smooth when I leave the line.

Here's what I do: I go up and stage at the first light. I put the clutch all the way in.. then let out slowly until the car starts to creep forward and trips the second set of lights. I then put the the clutch in another 1/4".. right where it's about to engage. I floor it, build up boost with LC, then when the lights turn green, I start slipping the clutch and feel the car.. as the hood rises I keep rising my foot, then when I feel the pull of the gear, I release all the way.

With the slippage, I don't really smell the clutch, maybe for a little bit but after I get back to the staging lanes it's gone. I was able to pull some low 1.8 60's, which isn't amazing but it was enough for me to get off the line.

As for the 1-2 gear change.. AZScoobie describes it best. This is what he said to me:

Quote:
Turn that silly Launch control/flat shifting option off in the utec.. I know you and you can outdrive that feature. On the second gear change you will need to preload the shifter slightly, Hover your foot on the clutch, Plant your foot on the gas, Bump the clutch super fast letting RPM's ride the limiter for a nano second as you make the gear change. Its hard on everything but its on the only way to get that 1/8th mile ET down.. Thats why I have a 7.33 1/8th at 98mph under my belt while others dont..
If you don't want to do that, you can just do what I do. I dip the shifter into 2nd, keep my foot planted, and do it like I do the launch.. I feel the pull of the car.

BTW, What was your 1/8th mile trap speed?

Big Turkey: Thanks for the help

That sounds like a way better way to launch. I've been keeping the clutch planted all the way down and releasing it at a quick pace just enough for there to be a bit of slip and a bit of wheel spin. Dragging the clutch to stage the car is also a good way to pre-load the drivetrain to eliminate the slack (and reduces shock) instead of driving up, hitting breaks, etc... course that's exactly what I was doing.. (must think!)

AZScoobie's method looks great on paper, but seems tough to do... It seems that the faster I try to move the shifter, the harder it is to actually get the 2nd gear and the more the synchros bitch. (and I bet I was cringing on each 1-2 shift of the night )
I'll try your 1-2 method as well.

Unfortunately, the track doesn't record the 1/8 mile speed, but I'm guessing it's not that great due to the bog in 1st and the slow 1-2 shift. I'm pretty sure I'm making up some time in the last 1/8 mile.

Thanks again for your tips
