Default Washington exhaust vs cops

I'm new to Washington State and wondering about cops vs exhaust. I plan on getting a decently loud exhaust for my subaru and wondering how the cops deal with louder exhaust. Hope someone can help, thanks.

A lot of depends on how your car looks. My car is mild in terms of exterior modification and my exhaust is pretty loud and I've never been pulled over for it.

i've never been hassled for it, but i always get tasteful exhaust setups over the obnoxiously loud ones.. mine probably stay under the radar for legal decibel levels.

that being said.. when my EWG was open dump, I never really got hassled, and I know plenty of other people with loud setups that haven't been hassled.

a lot of it probably depends on where and when you drive, though.

I've never heard of someone not being a douche and getting pulled over for exhaust.

Its not "us" against "them". Its not "them" against "exhausts". Its the police treating you like the person that you portray yourself as. If you drive around like an *******, acting like a douche, you will get treated as such.

Keep in mind, any non-OEM exhaust modification is technically illegal. So, even the quite Prodrive mufflers and such are illegal for street use. But you can get a full catless TurboXS RFL or something and never get a second look from police if you're not a dick about it.

It mostly depends on where you are/live. I was pulled over once for exhaust when I was cruising in 4th gear at 30mph...Wasn't speeding or acting like a douche. Sometimes cops want to pull people over just because. That said, that's the only time in 5 years I've been pulled over since having a car with 'loud' exhaust.

Avoid small towns. They have nothing better to do, than profile and pull you over for what looks to be an aftermarket muffler.

Thanks for the replies. Now that I think about it, it shouldn't be too loud? I'll be running Invidia Q300 with a catless downpipe.

pretty mid range in terms of loudness. it will be loud enough to draw attention when you're on it.

Default Washington exhaust vs cops

I have a catless nvidia N1 race TB with an EWG and I've never had an issue, I just try and be smart when I go into boost and have never been pulled over or looked at other than a thumbs up from the kitsap county sheriffs

I have a nameless track pipe on my hatch, so no muffler at all and I've never been pulled over for its loudness, even when passing cops that are going under the speed limit. Can they pull you over for it? Yes definitely because all exhaust mods in WA are illegal as 12 said. Is it likely to happen? Not unless you're calling attention to yourself. And a q300 is definitely not that loud and IMO looks so close to stock that it's even more unlikely.

I have a catless Invidia N1 street turboback with Type-RA gear ratios (cruising at 60 is about 3000 rpms). I have never gotten pulled over SOLELY because of my exhaust.

I've been pulled over for California stops, speeding, and surprisingly my tint strip on my windshield. I've been questioned though during those stops but because I was respectful they didn't seem to care but did remind me of the law.

Cops have mostly been cool. I even had a state patrol officer give me the "gay" wave.

I've got a full Nameless performance turbo back with no cat, resonator in mid-pipe, and 4" mufflers on the axle back. Even cracking open the external wastegate I've never gotten messed with. I got hassled more for having no front plate displayed than anything else in this state.

I never did, until I switched to a Boso axle back. However, I have a completely built motor and with this exhaust you can hear me blocks away and I sound like a fighter jet. So, I will mot be running my Boso much haha just to and from shows and track.

It really depends on the officer and the situation. Being a former police officer here in Wa myself, it's not something I've ever written a citation for. I can't really remember pulling anyone over for a modified exhaust even. Without actually looking up the RCW, it does say that any modification to an exhaust that amplifies the sound is illegal.

Don't be an idiot and don't bring unwanted attention to yourself and you should be fine. None of my vehicles' exhausts have ever been stock, and I've never been stopped. Then again, I know plenty of people who have been stopped and cited. They usually bitch to me about how it isn't fair and how they were targeted. I simply refer them back to the RCW.

If you have any questions about Washington laws, feel free to PM me. I've been in law enforcement for about 8 years now.

Had a catless tbe on my sti (like many other people in the area) and never got pulled over for it. As said above, avoid areas like Kirkland if you really want to play it safe, but you SHOULD be ok. But who knows, **** happens sometimes.

ive had loud setups on all my subarus and only been pulled over twice for it since 2006. once was in federal way with my 3.5 inch turboback, got a warning, and the other was in east hill kent with a jic spartan got a ticket for it. both times i was going the speed limit and was actually in neutral coasting to the stop light when the cop pulled out. so i think it was more of a visual thing than a db thing.

I've had the Invidia Catless DP and Q300 for a month so far and had no issues with cops. If you would like to hear how loud it sounds, let me know.

^ This. Don't get a stupid loud exhaust and/or drive around like an idiot and you'll be fine. I had a catless performance coated GReddy Evo 2 with EL headers. I drove in Downtown Seattle a lot with SPD behind and around me all the time, no problems. I've even had WSP and KC Sheriffs around me and nothing, even with 15% tint all around. The times I've gotten warned about something, nobody questioned the exhaust. And the ONE time I got a ticket, I totally deserved. I'm a strongly believe that if you get pulled over and get a ticket then you're creating attention to yourself somehow.

On a side note, I'm at ease that I don't have to worry about things like this anymore .

I've only ever been pulled over once for exhaust. It was right outside PIA's parking lot. I hadn't had a chance to even get up to the speed limit yet. No ticket, just a warning.

He probably just told you exhaust because it was the only thing he could actually pull you over for based on visual alone. He was sniffin for something bigger.
