Default H-6 rear brake upgrade

Just did it...here are some pics...It was easy for the most part. I did have hesitation "modifying" my rotor shield. But I had to do it to make it fit. Look good. I haven't driven it yet. And don't really expect too much more braking power. It'll complement my 4 pots up front though.

here is the only other part needed..the legacy H-6 bracket. Hell the whole conversion is only $200. Can't beat that.

is the drum the same size / does your emergency brake still work?

I was thinking about doing this too.

same questions as above, plus are the H-6 rotors vented as well? Also is $200 for all new parts? Part #'s if you have them.

Thanks

Is the thickness of the hub part of the H-6 rotor the same as the WRX one? In othre words, was the rim position changed?

Can you measure the rotor diameter WRX vs. H-6 please.

Great mod. Great job.

Thanks!

Ok let's see...the emergency brake still works. That section of the rotor is exactly the same size, thickness and all It is still a solid rotor like the stock ones. Don't bet your life on it but I am pretty sure, almost positive the rotor diameter is 11.4 instead of 10.4 for stock. So you gain a whole inch there. The pad contact area covers the whole rotor surface just like stock. If you know what I mean there um, Still haven't driven it yet so.....I will later tonight But it fills out the wheel as much as the fronts do know.

thanks

I'd expect just over 10% more braking power in the rear...

10.4 vs. 11.4 puts the braking force about 10% further out. Given the same pressure, you'll have ~10% more stopping force, think of it as a lever, you just got a longer one.

You also increased swept area, which will allow better heat dissipation, but I doubt that's a big issue on the rears.

Looks like a no brainer for anyone doing the fronts that doesn't want to go whole hog like the Wilwood rear kit.

I ordered the same exact set-up from subaruparts.com. Should get them next week. Thanks for the info!

WHat exactly did you have to do to the brake shield to get them to fit?

Thanks,

Tim

Oh the part numbers are:

Support Brackets 26625AE000

Here is a pic of the 11.4" rear rotors installed

and a pic of the 11.3" stock front rotors.

Stock rear rotor size is 10.3", so you gain 1.1" in diameter. The rear brake pads are just over 1.3" tall at their widest, meaning swept area on a 10.3" rotor is about 19.7 square inches. Swept area on a 11.4" rotor w/1.3" tall pad is about 21.95 square inches.

So with 11.4" rear rotors, you'll have 111% of your original 10.3" rear rotor braking power.

I noticed that the back end "hunkered down" a bit more under heavy braking. Worth the time and money, IMHO. FWIW, I'm using Porterfield carbon kevlar pads.

Can anyone tell me what more is involved in doing this on a GC8 RS?

I would really love bigger rear brakes when I do my bigger front brakes.

I had to remove the brake shield. It is spot welded on to the axle bearing carrier? You'll see. I just took a big screwdriver and started prying at the spot welds, worked my way around and it comes off pretty easy. About six little spot welds. I dremeled the remains of the spot welds down and painted the bare metal. Look clean. You'll see once you get the stock rotor off, very simple. You'll have to reuse your caliper slider pins in the new bracket.

Thumbs up

I'm suprised that some people were unaware of this upgrade.

It's definitely a great deal... can't beat $200 for more braking power.

I would get it myself, but I had the Legacy Turbo rear vented rotors and calipers off of my old RS... although they were a BIT more cash new (about $500 ).

Same calipers, so yeppers to the 1 pot.

Even the vented rear Turbo Legacy setup is still a 1 pot.

So, what is the risk of having no brake shield? Will this affect brake cooling or does it just protect from roadkill?

I would imagine there must be vented rear rotors available aftermarket for this conversion as well? I would be looking for Legacy Rear rotors, yes?

$200/each rotor for the turbo legacy kit seems a bit high in comparison to many oem sized aftermarket fronts, unless they were already cryo treated, etc?

Thanks

Honestly, unless your driving at a race track or just driving the PISS out of your car....vented rear rotors are overkill. I don't think Subaru makes a vented rear rotor in the 11.4in size. The turbo legacy vented rears are smaller I believe. Since I have never driven my brakes 10/10ths before, and probably never will, I didn't need an increase in sustained performance as in reducing brake fade and such. I was really going for a better look. Those stock rears are just so tiny. These fill out the rear wheels nicely. And it's not expensive at all.

The increase in swept area associated with the larger rotors will aid in fade-resistance. The rear brakes typically do about 20% of the total braking, so fade in the rear probably isn't a big deal to begin with.

I imagine after adding an inch to the diameter and zero extra force (same caliper) you will have even fewer concerns with heat in th rear.

When Gary Sheenan had the stock brakes all around he was frying the front brakes, not the rears. Heat shouldn't be a major concern in the rear at all, especially with this setup.

Where did you source all of the parts from? If they are are from a Subaru dealer, then that is a good price! Good mod!

JamesC,

It's $200 for everything. 2 rotors and 2 brackets. It was $226 shipped for me.

I was going back and reading an earlier thread and someone suggested using the sheilds from the H-6. Anyone have any thoughts on this? (I guess you'd have to weld these ones on too....ugh)
