Question WRX rear brake upgrade anyone?

My dealer offers a rear brake kit that upgrade's the rear discs, sourced from what i believe is the Outback H6. It costs around $299 installed. I dont know any specifics, but from real world experience (from a couple of friends who installed it on their wrx) the car seems to just HUG the road when you brake instead of the stock "dive" the car has when braking. That it feels like it gets pulled into the road all around instead of just ducking the front. Plus they tell me it saves stress on the front brakes because it balances it out more. Anyone else do this or a similar upgrade?

Im thinking of doing this soon...

sounds like a decent upgrade... dunno if the performance gains are going to be quite that significant.. the only difference is the rotors are 25mm larger. Will that really keep the front from diving though? I might have to see if I can just buy the rotors from someplace like subaruparts and do it myself. I shouldn't need anything other than the rotors correct?

I looked at a couple Legacys last time I was at the dealership. It seems this is a similar brake upgrade as when going from GC8 RS frronts to WRX fronts...the calipers are the same, just spaced further out on the rotor, and the rotor is also larger.

I didn't notice any significant braking increase when I switched to the WRX fronts.

You'll have to get the rear caliper bracket and rotor, most likely. I believe North Ursula had a post on this a while back.

it includes other stuff besides the discs, like calliper brackets and such , i dont remember exactly what.

but the diference in the real world is very noticeable. (the lack of dive specially)

It is a larger (solid I believe) rotor and larger caliper brackets to clear said larger rotor. The stock rear caliper remains. Being that the rotors are about $75/ea and the brackets at $55/ea, that's a damn good price installed. Of course, things might cost a bit different in nice warm sunny places like Puerto Rico... I have to come visit you and Leo... it's 25 degrees here in New Hampshire .

Can we get slotted or crossdrilled/slotted for these rotors?

It would be great if you can post the parts number.

Subaru does not make slotted or crossdrilled rotors, so I don't have any part numbers for those. Prog, I'm there !

I like the idea of upsizing the rear brakes too.

Now here's a related question that NU might know. I'm going to upgrade my 02RS front brakes to WRX size. Can I use my current front caliper mounting brackets in the rear to go with larger rear disks? Obviously, I'd have to get different rear disks, but the fewer things I have to buy, the better.

HM3SC - I'm planning to get MRT slotted rotors directly from them (http://www.mrtrally.com.au/)

Nope, the bracket is the wrong size and shape to be of any use .

Brian:
From your experience, if I want to upgrade rear brake, would you recommend the old Legacy Turbo Vented Brake Conversion or new Legacy Larger solid rotor/caliper brackets Conversion? Will the rear brake mod make noticeable stopping difference?
(My current plan will be Subaru 4 pots,SS lines, Single Stage Brake Booster, just don't know should I upgrade rear as well)
Thanks,
Benjamin

Thing is, the rear brakes do about 1/2 the job the fronts do (well, maybe a bit more ). When you do the legacy swap you get A) the same size rotors, but they are vented, which will help resist fade) and B) a larger caliper with a larger piston and a requisite larger pad. If you do the H6 upgrade, you retain the same pad and caliper in favor of a larger rotor. I personally would rather have the vented rotor, but it would be tough to say if one is better than the other. One you gain a bit of swept area, the other you gain perhaps a bit less swept area but gain venting. Tough call, especially since both conversions are around the same price (the Legacy swap is a bit more because of the need for brand new pads as well). I'd love someone local to want to try the H6 deal so that I can A) do it and make a mods page and B) do some real number comparisons of piston size and swept area of both setups.

someone lemme know how they're coming w/ this. I'm definitely interested in trying it since it seems like something I might be able to do myself.

Brian, do you have part #'s for the H6 rotor and caliper bracket? I can't find any listings for the H6.

Nope, the Outback H6 is technically a Legacy, and I don't have the Legacy parts database nor any of the parts books. Going to have to make a trip and ask the dealership if you need part numbers I'm afraid .

Default brakes

at my dealership we wouldnt have noticed.... i had the oem r.5RS front 10.7" 2pots this summer and my company car(2002 legacy GT-limited) had the same 11.4's as the 02 WRX. i was rather tempted to kinda just swap them over bc probbly no one would notice, even most tech's bc only the GT-limited comes with the 11.4's. the normal gt's have 10.7's

ive got the sti 11.7" 4 piston setup in teh front of my car, and the outback98 rear 10.5" disc's on the back of mine. my rears are slightly bigger than the 10.3' 02 wrx.

if u can get the upgrade for $300 installed, that is a incredible deal. new legacy turbo vented upgrade costs like $580 from ISR, thats the only place ive seen it. sourcing the parts used seems like the most likely way to do it, but then u are dealing with parts from a OLD!!! car. early 90's and then pads, new rotors, caliper rebuild etc is just money. id probbly just do the thingy with teh H6 stuff bc its a good deal. u can always get your rotors cyro'ed and slotted or drilled aftermarket, its a cheap way to get cool rotors. alot of places that sell rotors get tehm from brembo or somone and then slott/drill them to order.

my car stops. HArdcore, but it may be more due to my 2350 lb weight. -no awd ;(

peace

The legacy vented setup from ISR is rather overpriced, especially if you know how much the parts cost the dealership in the first place . Become good friends with your parts guy, and it will be a very handy thing .

Power Slot has the slotted rotors for the WRX front and rear and the new ones for the rear for the Legacies. This means you can have the fronts and rears slotted!

Default rotors

i have a set of 02 wrx rotors 11.4's front (actually not WRX, theyre from a 01 outback) that should be ran throught a lathe and cleaned up. but afterwards they would be appropriate for cyro-ing and then slotting/drilling. i got no use for them, so they're up for grabs. i didnt think they'd be useful, i was figuring to get some more calipers and sell them as a kit if anyone would be intersted. front 11.4's

So I got my 11.4" rear rotors installed yesterday...

Running DMS 40's w/180 springs, SS lines and Porterfield brake pads - The car still dives somewhat (duh, of course weight transfer happens), but it's definitely "settled". I like it.
