A/V guys, I need some help on a decision.
I would have posted this in the A/V thread, but there is so much chatter in there it frequently gets ignored now. I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR607 and they threw in two Polk Audio TSi 100 bookshelves in for free. I hooked them up last night and like them so much that I just ordered a Polk Audio CS1 center channel for $68 shipped. Now, there are a couple of deals going on floor standing speakers for the fronts. One is the Polk Audio Monitor 70 for $175 each shipped. Another is the Polk Audio Monitor 50 for $99 each shipped. Or, should I just hold off for a deal on some TSi 200 bookshelves? Are the standing monitors going to work well in a system that is primarily for 5.1 movie watching or would the TSi 200s round out the system better for that? I would actually like to go away from the whole "bookshelf speakers on stands" for the front, if these would work well in a HT environment.
Thanks!

get the towers for the fronts. you'll love 'em.
(my 5.1 surround is all polk. i'll tittywop in a sec.) edit: i lied. too lazy. but anyway, i have pretty much the exact same setup with the audio monitor 50s as my front l/r. great bang for the buck with a rich, full sound. Last edited by cnw; 09-22-2009 at 05:02 PM. Reason: updated speaker model |

Going with towers for the fronts is very intriguing so I can get rid of what I have now which are just accidents waiting to happen. They are white plaster columns with bookshelf speakers on top on either side of the TV. UGH.
So, I guess the question is then, are the 70s worth the extra $75 each over the 50s? |

regardless of the 50 or 70 series though, they'll be better than using bookshelf speakers as your fronts. these sumbitches can crank. i did the "set up 5.1 system and test it with the bank robbery scene in heat at a volume level that nears bleeding" thing and was thoroughly impressed with how crystal clear the highs and midrange was (the lows were already covered).

So which ones do you have, cnw? These are going in an area that is about 14 or 15 feet deep (from TV wall to couch wall) and probably 20 feet or more wide. Right now the speakers are on either side of the TV but it doesn't necessarily have to remain like that if I get these. I suppose I could move them out a bit. Either way, I'm sure the 50s will be plenty especially if I'm just using TSi 100s for the rears, do you agree? Plus, it'll be way easier to sell the wife on $200 a pair rather than $350.

Newegg. I'm finding the deals on Ben's Bargains. Just do a search for Polk.
That is another place that needs upgrading but will definitely have to a wait a bit. Right now I'm using the one that came in the Onkyo HTiB HTS-760. It's an 8" sub. Since this new receiver has two preouts for two subwoofers, I will probably just keep that one and add a nice 10" or 12" to the system sometime down the road. |

yes, those are indeed stuffed poop dolls. poop is funny. poop. cs1 center channel, psw111 sub. yes, that's my original (and working) snes. and monitor 40 bookshelf speakers as my surrounds. for condo life, they're more than i need. i bought them when i lived in a sfh with a loooong living room and they were plenty for even that place. |

No direct answer to your question, but when I had a few questions about my Polks, there were a bunch of helpful people here: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/

I think you sold me on the 50s. For $99 each shipped, is that a pretty decent deal?
My wife may kill me tonight when I tell her I ordered a center channel and I want to order these 50s. I've already boughtt a new 55" Sammy LED, a new metal & glass TV stand for the new TV, a new Onkyo TX-SR607, and a new Sony Blu-Ray player. |

C/N's: Buy them. I bought mine from Newegg, and paid considerably more. You would be retarded not to snatch them up at that price. |
