It seems like all the forums on the web are being flooded now with people looking to buy new and used Imprezas. The WRX introduction is doing exactly what I was afraid of. Looks like our "unique" cars are going to be the next Civics. Lots of people are asking about buying 5 year old Imprezas and making them look like a WRX. Geez.

Ahhh dont look at it like that, we now have what we have been wanting for the past few years. We have the WRX on our shores!!! The WRX or subaru's in general will never be "the next civic" the two cars are in totally different classes.

Nothing's wrong with Civics. Great cars for the money. But the thing I liked most about the RS when I bought it was its rarity. I like being one of only 3 or 4 Imprezas in my whole town and not seeing another RS on the road for several months at a time.

same here, RARITY. thats the only reason y i bought myself a scoobie and the fact that their great on wet roads.. now a days im seeing more and more scoobies around my town which isnt a bad thing thing but that kinda gives me mixed feeling about just me alone in my town havin a scoobie, but then again sooner or later everyones gonna figurs out y scoobies are the best...

I hear ya Bryan!!! I remember the first time I got my RS it was still in plastic going through inspection. I would have people stop me on the street or chase me down just to ask what kind of car it was. I would go at least a month w/o another rs sighting that is to be no more. We are still a rare breed and you know we still get the looks!! I also own a 97 civic hatchback with moderate mods and it still doesn't come close to comparison with the rs, remember we have AWD!!!!!!! and HHHHHPPPPPPP!!!! and remember also they don't make our body style anymore. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I love this car even more than the day we met.

I don't understand your concern. The RS is still a limited production vehicle. They are selling a lot more regular impreza's, now, but they look substantially different than the RS, especially the new ones with no hood scoop.

Why would people looking to by used models decrease the rarity??? It's still the same number of cars on the road.

Also, you can't simultaneously complain that there are getting to be too many, and that SOA isn't bringing performance models over. The ONLY reason a company will offer a performance model is if they get high sell-through on the regular models.

Heh. Some of us felt the same way when the RS was introduced! (I had a '97 -- not a true OG like Mike Shields or Paul Eklund, but close) At the time we were calling it the "rice sport" trim.

If we all discourage the street racer / body kit kids on the boards, we can retain the "feel" of the club...

Post a crazy DIY mod that you have done. That would be in line with the way i-Club used to work...

I guess it's more that I don't want it to become a rice-mobile. Other than a few scattered misguided individuals on this site, Imprezas aren't popular rice targets. The fact that the WRX exists makes lower Imprezas bigger targets of individuals who will ruin the reputation of the rest of us.

Sure I want them to bring a WRX here. But I don't want anybody buying one except me

Folks,
Don't get so upset. This to, will pass. As an former owner of 6 BMW's in the last 17 years, I know what can happen when a car "catches" on with the Johnny come lately crowd. The E30 M3 is a perfect example. There were and still are very few of them. Then the E36 M3 brought the car wider acceptence and visibility. For a while anyone with a E36, wanted to make their regular 3-series look like a M3. Now there's the E46 M3--priced so high and yet, even stupid dealers are adding $10,000 to the MSRP. Unless SOA gets "control" of the greed that some short-sighted dealers are trying to take advantage of the buying public, the WRX will meet the same fate. It will get heavier and more expensive and out of the reach of the enthusiasts that made it popular in the first place. The first generation RS will always be a one and only (OAO) and we all know who was there first. Though a "newbie" I have always had the highest respect for the Scooby marque even when I was driving BMW's. But, I sold my last BMW, a 97 M3 fully tricked-out and used at the track (not a drag strip). Now I own a 2001 2.5RS that for me is the pocket rocket that I've always wanted. Turbo in two years.

I doubt it will ever get to the same level as the Civics. I see a ton of Civics for every RS I see.

Just taking some numbers from a recent LA Times story about the volume of sales so far in 2001. I checked the Subaru numbers and they are like well below all the major manufacturers. Subaru's numbers were lower than BMWs. I think the only notable manufacturer that had less volume was Porsche.

So I'm inclined to say that Imprezas won't saturate any one area.

Hrm,.. here in the Bay Area you can't drive more then a block or so without seeing a Porsche! So far I've only seen 3 WRX's on the road.

Why is everyone so worried about having a "rare" car. A rare car is one that is hard to come across... a 22B is rare. A 2.5RS or WRX is something anyone can go to their dealership and buy... not rare but just not popular. Figure that one platform, the Legacy, makes up half of Subaru manufacturing and most of those are Outback Wagons. Divide the rest among Foresters and Imprezas and you begin to see what I'm talking about. The WRX is just bringing more popularity to the Impreza platform... probibly due to the hefty advertising(which the 2.5RS never got) and good reviews. I truly believe that no Impreza will ever become as popular as the Civic... or that the WRX will even be mentiond when people talk about "performance" cars after this introduction year. The only people who will be talking about them are us, the true enthusists, who won't be trading our Scoobs in as soon as the new A4 comes out or whatever the next new-vehicle-I-just-gotta-have is. Subaru owners are known to buy more than one Subaru in their lives, correct? I don't think typical WRX owners will follow that pattern.

As said already in this post, the RS is what brought the WRX here. PERIOD. Without that car, we would not see the WRX in any form. There is no way the impreza will ever become the next civic, people in this country are too dumb to even realize the benefits of AWD or know about the WRC (why is NASCAR so popular: dumb americans). This is changing, and with that change we will see more performance parts availability and other pluses, don't fret some of the changes are positive. Anything that gets Americans to realize SUV's are just pieces of ****(de-evolution: solid rear axles, etc.) which car manufacturers can make the most $$ off of is GOOD. Look at the rest of the world, are impreza's the civic of the world?? NO. They are just another great, reliable, performance car that has a cult-like following. Don't worry, everything will work out and we'll start to see SICK cars come to our shores that SUBARU helped get here.

Another very good reason the Impreza will never become "another Civic" as far as numbers are concerned is production capacity. Honda is simply a much larger company than Fuji Heavy Industries.

So chill and enjoy your Impreza with the rest of the few (but growing) and proud, even "new fans" like me.

Personally, I feel I have the least in common with the typical Outback Legacy owner. Most of which around here (southern New England) own them as they're the trendy alternative to a SUV. Plus they're usually soccer Mom's or retirees...

But they can be driven/owned by anyone, my WRX is still a blast.

I think you all will have to get used to Scoobies' increasing popularity. The new impreza line is pretty devastating. 4 Models (not including the OBS), all with AWD and at least 165HP, and reasonably priced. Subaru is moving up in the car world. But really isn't that a good thing? It's time we let the country in on our little secret.

Look at it this way. YOUR RS will still be "rare" since all the new ones being sold are the new body style. They don't infringe on your unique look at all.

Well I'm a newbie to Subaru's so I suppose I should give my two cents. I heard about the WRX coming to the states a couple of months ago and it really interested me. Before then I knew I wanted a new car but I wasn't sure what to get. Hondas ARE good cars,.. and good values, but I didn't want something that everyone else had and especially in my area; something that every one had riced out.

I wouldn't have minded getting a BMW except that they are a little out of my price range and the community seemed a little too obsessed with having super expensive mods,.. and worrying about the virtues of leatherette over real leather.

So I came to the I-club boards after finding out about the WRX to find out more and I was surprised to see such and enthusiastic community. Better yet, the people on the boards seemed nice. There isn't the same amount of flaming and chest pounding that goes on with some other vehicle boards and that says a lot about the car and the type of enthusiast it attracts.

Sure it took a test drive to get me comletely hooked on the car, but knowing there were others that I could share my enthusiasm with is a very cool thing, not something that I got with my pervious cars (dont laugh,... a Chevy Beretta,.. and an Escort).

So I guess what I'm saying,.. is please don't think every newbie is coming in to dilute your scene. Some of us are here to enhance it or "Grow the pie" if you think in business terms.

And I remember when there were a ton of Olds Cutlasses for every Civic that I'd see. The Civic's popularity is not that old. Things will change. They always do.

10,000 WRX's... Like maybe 40,000 New RS's/TS's/OBS's (Mostly OBS)...

Meanwhile, Honda is going to have 12,000 of the NEW Si, and HUNDREDS of thousands of the other civics...

Seriously. Have you checked out any of the other boards recently? They're filled with war stories by little snots that are obviously lying and with a big "import vs domestic" war. Even on the ZX2 board, which I tend to like, they're really big into "our domestic is better than your Jap crap" stuff. That one is especially funny since the ZX2 is made in Mexico and the Civic is made in the United States.

BryanW: Come'on, play nice. We all should share our toys. My first car was a 1988 XT6, so I think I'm amongst the subie oldies. Sure, I think the WRX is causing more exposure than I'd like, but that's because it's "just that DAMN good". (This also applies to other subies.) Besides, your 2000 RS isn't that old either.

WhiteRex: Isn't it true that the WRC came first? From what I recall, the impreza WRC was made as a better replacement for the Legacy in rallying.

I was very surprised when I heard SOA was "only making 10,000 WRXs for the U.S." Isn't 10,000 a high number? That's *only* 200 per state!!!
