Default Switchblade key for a 2007 WRX?

Hey everyone, after months of looking I broke down and bought an 07 WRX (newer and more then I had wanted to spend).

Anyways, just wondering if there has been anyone successful in making a switchblack style 07 wrx key? I searched but the only thread hadn't been updated since feb of last year, didn't want to bump a year old thread . Having my fob and key in one unit would be a lot nicer in my pocket.

Thanks everyone

I was wondering about this too, I think the new outbacks come with one so I'd be interested to see if the dealer could just cut and program one of those.

I dunno what the wrx key and remote looks like, but for my impreza 2.5i, I got this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=140575868866

then

I took apart my key remote and put the electronics into the new remote. Then took the key blank to a local key smith and get it fit to work for my switchblade.

Careful to not touch the terminals on the key remote electronic board,

And the key blank must be made at a local locksmith. No hardware store can do it at ease. At the local locksmith, they do it be hand rather than places like home depot or true value who uses the machine to cut it.

EDIT: Also, for my 2007 impreza 2.5i, my key did not have a key transponder chip (a chip that is in newer models or the wrx models that is needed to be near the ignition in order to turn the key) so if you have a transponder then you need to hack up your key to get the chip and some of the ebay key remote has a slot for the chip.

While not a switchblade key, the 08/09 Legacy key is one piece which integrates the key and key fob into one unit. There was a group buy on LegacyGT.com almost 4 years ago on this. It is not cheap, as the group buy price was $165 per key, it's probably cheaper now. You may be able to find a dealer to get this for you, but most may be hesitant to cut it for an earlier Impreza, program the immobilizer as well as program the key fob. To my knowledge it CAN be made to work, but finding a dealer to do it, may be the issue.

Stock 2 piece key and fob

08/09 Legacy key

or, you can always make your own switchblade key.

Thanks for the link Trooper. Just wish there was a walkthrough for the 07 WRX key, I'd be a lot more confident that way. Hacking up keys and worrying about placement of immobilizer chips may be over my head

oh how i wish the stock key/fob for my wrx weren't so damn big. would have been nice to either have them small, or combine them into one like everyone else.

yup, thats why I've always been a fan of the switchblade design, nothing sharp in your pocket, and everything conveniently in one device.

The guy who wrote that has a 2005 Saab. The 02-05 Subaru's (and Saabs) had the 16 bit ECU and did NOT come with an immobilizer chip in the key. Therefore, he did not have to mess with it.

You could glue a spare key up inside the steering column to trigger the immobilizer circuitry and then build the key in the tutorial.

that thing is awesome looking, the only flaw I see is that there are no buttons for lock and unlock. Unless I'm missing something. I love the idea

there are old threads on this and very few that address the immobilizer chip (dunno why, rarely any photos taken)

if you check amazon actually, there's a model for ~80 that you just transplant the remote's pcb board/buttons into and get the key cut (again, chip not addressed)

good luck!

i saw the keyport in person, very cool, but i only have one key in my life, keypads and keycards for everything else...

That's the problem I'm finding, all of the diy's out there are on vehicles without an immobilizer chip.

I stopped by my local dealer to both get a price on a Legacy key and ask their opinions on whether or not it could be programmed for an '07 Impreza. While the price has come down ($125) their "official" stance was it would not work with an Imprezza...mostly because nobody's tried it. The dude did mention to check some forums to see if anybody's actually done it since experimenting with a key that expensive isn't on their to do list

So, I guess the question is...has anybody actually successfully programmed an integrated Legacy fob to work on an '07?

I've always wanted to do the AUDM key:

The key blank looks right for the 3g Impreza. No idea if the remote and chip are compatible with USDM though.
