i invested over $1,000 in detailing products...30+ hours of detailing later...feeling good about my black paint! the front bumper needs to get resprayed, no amount of detailing will fix the pits on this subaru paint!

This is a result of:

Torq 10FX Polisher
Chemical Guys V32 with Orange Microfiber Pad
Chemical Guys V36 with Orange Foam Pad
Chemical Guys V38 with White Foam Pad
Chemical Guys Glazeworkz Glaze
Chemical Guys JetSeal Sealant
Chemical Guys Black Luminous Wax

I'd say I got 90-95% correction...I had to leave some scuffs in place cause I didn't want to polish more and they aren't really visible unless you have OCD like me.

I'm planning on factory ordering a 2017 wrx in the next month and against others recommendations I really want to go with the black car, even with the maintenance it requires it's just a great looking color. I have a little side job in a detail shop so keeping it clean won't be an issue but to those of you who've had a black wrx for a few years how does the paint hold up? I'm planning on driving the car year round for the next 5 years and I live in Buffalo NY so we get a pretty serious winter here so it'd be nice if the car didn't look 10 years old when it's 2 years old. Also what methods of protecting the paint have worked best for those of you that've gone the extra mile in paint protection? Thanks!
Subaru paint doesn't hold up, no matter the color. I'd get a clear bra no questions asked, the paint chips on the front will drive you crazy. I've got a few on the doors and others in back of the tires (sticky tires are sticky) but I can live with that, the front would be a mess if I didn't put something on there. Hood I've already replaced once (I'm using the damaged one as a winter hood now) , so doing a full hood if you can afford it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I've got a DGM which isn't black, but close enough. Outside of the chips, it's not bad. Paint is my biggest gripe with Subaru, this car will decide if I stay Subaru next time I think (they need to change up something in the next few years).

I will tell you right now the paint is very soft on a hte subaru. It will take you being cautious threw the years only hand wash and proper technique will prevent imperfections in the paint. Be sure to do research on companies before you go and make sure they are not skipping steps. 2 buckets right kind of soap, right kind of micro fibers not cheap ones. ETC

I have clear bra and Opticoat. Worth every penny.

Had same setup on my previous vehicle.

You do have to clean and protect it properly though. It can't save you from poor car detailing techniques and products.

got my 2016 wrx ceramic coated. best $700 I ever spent. it has 5k miles on it now and I use the two bucket method to hand wash it every couple of weeks. blow it dry with a leaf blower and hand dry any remaining water. never had to wax it at all and it looks SUPPPPPPPPPER CLEAN.

obviously, it won't protect against all damage, but it does help with bugs, small debris, dirt, etc. didn't want to get a clear bra because I don't like the fact you can see it.

here is a pic right after a recent hand wash:
