Default Hit gas hard from dead stop and goes nowhere

I've had this problem for a while where I'm at a stoplight and hit the gas...sometimes hard/quick and the car goes nowhere. There are no signs of it dying as the engine runs fine but after I let off the gas for a few seconds and slowly put my foot into it then it'll take off. It's a 95 Impreza 2.2 Automatic. It's also a slug, especially for a 2.2. I did a head gasket job and cleaned carbon off the pistons heads about 10k miles ago. I've also put on a different TPS with no change in performance. Any ideas?

Also, when I take sharp turns there is a lurching/popping noise. WTH....I've replaced both front CVs. Help please.

Might be your torque converter going bad, or it could be that you have a clogged fuel filter. Have you changed your plugs and wires lately? Also, check all your grounds on the engine harness.

I used to have the same problem with a Volkswagon I had. It about got me killed several times. It turned out to be the transmission was low on fluid. I couldn't check it on that car because the transmission was sealed and required special tools to check the fluid level or add fluid. When the fluid was replaced, the problem went away.

Good luck........

that used to happen on my old impreza, it was just a 97, 1.6 GL, it turned out it was because i had a "sports air filter" turns out it didnt help the performance, i put back in the standard one and it took off again!!

The transmission filter and trans oil were changed about 12k ago. Trans fluid is at correct level.

Fuel filter is only 9 months old. Plugs and wires are new. Any way of figuring out if it is the torque converter and would it only do it on slow sharp turns? When I put my foot into it and I'm already at a decent speed some days it acts like it has all the go in the world. Other times it will either delay really bad or not accellerate at all.....just maintain speed. Don't know about the harness grounds....figured if it's plugged in I shouldn't see and CEL codes and I don't.

irish- I do have a cone filter that is kinda clogging....I know I've needed to clean it or put the stock box back in....guess I'll try that next for sure. Appreciate it.....sometimes I just need someone to smack me.

check the fluids in your rear. My 95 L coupe used to jerk and pop when id go around sharp corners. I sold it to a buddy of mine who did some work on it and told me that the rear was almost completely dry.

I am going to say then that youhave a bad ground somewhere and it is really unlikely that it would throw a code. My question is, why do you think it's the transmission? Usually a loss of power is an engine issue so unless the tq coverter is going out there is no real reason to lose power there.

Do you have a CAI? If so do you run through puddles, is your MAF sensor clean? Also, check your compression, see if there is oil in your water or water in your oil, did you re-toque your heads properly... could be many things here. I would almost take it to a service shop and pay the $75 for an hour of diagnostic.

Will definitely check the rear this weekend.

Mean- I don't think it's the transmission....just replying to a couple ideas above. Would one of those ground kits fix the grounding issue or is that something I'm going to have to trace? Figured it would be some sort of sensor or engine issue but haven't been able to pinpoint it. Yes - CAI. No puddles. Sensor is clean but am going to put the stock box back on this weekend. No water in oil/oil in water. Retorqued heads per specs in correct bolt order and everything.

Thanks everyone who have given me some good ideas so far.

Checked the fluid on the differentials....they are good. Put the stock air box back in with a new filter....minor performance improvement but the car still seems to lack quite a bit of power that it is capable of. MAF is clean. Car still pops on slow turns like getting out of the drive way or slow corners.

Any other ideas? How do I check ground on the harness? Everything is plugged in and doesn't look loose. How do I pinpoint/test if the torque converter is the issue? Thanks.
