Default 04STi: BB's in a can sound, slow boost, no power

Was passing in 4th and then I heard a rattle can sound comming from the turbo area. Now under accel I hear it. No power. Sometimes makes boost, even then still no power. I think the turbo took a crap. Idles fine. Rattles a little durring reving, out of gear. A buddy told me a puff of white smoke came out of my exhaust when it happened, but I haven't seen any since. Any thoughts? Time for a green....

Also, the rattling doesn't get any louder or faster at higher rpms.

BBS in a can is how people always describe detonation. Any chance you got some bad gas? How much boost do you run? Mods?

The fact that it doesnt get any louder and comes from the turbo area tells me it may not be det though.

It's really difficult to get an ej257 to det when it's not under boost though - OP said he can recreate it in neutral free-revving.

Sounds like a fried turbo bearing if the car will not make boost.

maybe the flex joint under the turbo blew out and making the up-pipe heat shield rattle even more .... of course if you wastegate arm comes off you won't have any boost

It's offical, I'm the only NA STi in Florida! On my way to work the car would make a little boost, then, smoke real bad durring shifts. On the way home tonight, more of the same then no more noise and no more sound. I have a 255 pump, FMIC, short intake, halman mbc and a tune. Regular maint. including oil changes and all that stuff. Time for the 07 turbo and ewg.

Be sure and flush out any turbo parts that might have found their way into the intercooler and especially before they find their way into the engine. A turbo is one thing, turbo parts in the cylinders is another.

You've determined that this is the turbo and not the rings or pistons from pre-detonation? While the turbo does have oil going to it I'm not sure what to make of the smoke during shifts except that you usually close the throttle on a shift and that creates more vacuum at the piston which could be sucking up oil if a damaged piston or rings. What ever, Hope you get it running better and faster than ever soon. Hwy61

True true, I've parked teh car and will start pulling it apart within a few days. I'm more that confident it's the turbo. Rock solid idle. No miss or hesitation durring accel. I will start a new thread with pics when I tear it down. On a side note, 07 STi turbo on an 04?

I'm not to sure on the turbo. It was off of an 05 STi. Maybe around 35k on it.

It's pretty unusual for a street turbo to lock up without any prior warning (i.e., oil smoke in the exhaust). You're getting zero boost? That's pretty odd, amigo. I'm not saying the turbo isn't dead, but have you checked all your pre-turbo (manifold, up-pipe) and post-turbo charge-pipe connections?

You may want to pull the TI off the turbo and check the impeller shaft nut. My friend described the same noise and we was checking his car and found the nut was only on by one thread. I took it off by hand.

We tried replacing the nut, but the damage was already done and the turbo was changed.

Oh yeah, the dealer had serviced his turbo about a year before that. They told him they replaced the turbo,
