ok, nevermind. last night i tried to take apart the hvac on the 05 sti and i dont think its an easy job. the climate control knobs have white l.e.d.s under them and probably a green film up in the knobs themselfs. since i didnt have any experience taking the actual knobs apart i just left them together. i have taken the actual electronic buttons out of aftermarket stereos when they wore out and replaced them before, but this might actually be over my head a bit. so it looks like ill only be able to like change out the cigarette lighter light and whatnot. if anyone else has done a red conversion on an 05 sti, let me know how cause id still like to make the hvac match my guage cluster and stereo which are red.

yeah, i wasnt sure about taking the control knobs apart without knowing it has been done before.**edit* ill probly add new red leds for a brighter display*. i have however begun changing the window controls to red with new leds and wiring harnesses. im gonna install them on all the doors so they all light up. if anyone is interested, let me know and ill take pictures as i do it explain how. its pretty easy to do though without tampering with the existing green leds.

I would like to see pics if you have them. Putting in speakers and may as well do the door switchs while everthing is apart. Thanks |

ok, what i did was i bought some accent leds from like advance auto. they already have the resistors wired in so it takes out one step. if you take apart the window control panal you will see that you can just put the leds right in the little slots under the buttons. if you aim them pretty well and glue them in, they look very good. you have to use one led per button, including the door lock button. you can use as many as you want, but be sure you use the same brand of lights because different brands differ in brightness and color. to power these lights you must locate which wire powers the factory light. i think its a green wire, cant remember... just take a volt meter and touch black to ground and red in different slots on the end of the harness when the car is on. you should see power on one of the two green wires if im not mistaken. next wire in some kind of harness so that the door panel can be taken off in the future without unwiring the whole thing. i used an rc car wiring harness. you can get those at radioshack. wire the harness wires: red to the positive green wire, and black to the black ground wire. you can drill holes in the sides of the panel for the wires to come out to wire to the harness, thats what i did. its not a hard process, if i can make it look that good, anybody can. its just a little pricy, but not too bad. i think a pack of three lights is probly like 8 bucks, and the harness is probly around 3-5 bucks per harness. the process took me a couple hours but im slow and plus i was trying to figure out the best way to do it. if you need some pictures of it, i took a few and can email em or upload them. just send me an email at [email protected]

when i changed the color on my hvac i pulled off the face and instead of painting the bulbs or using condems i painted the back of the face with transparent red model paint from wal-mart. i taped up the hot, cold, and middle on the temp knob so they would keep their original colors of red, blue, and white and taped the 2 defrost positions up so the color stayed the same on them also. i was pleased with the results. if anybody wants pics i'll try to get some.

I just saw this thread; my USDM 05 STI has a green sort of plastic stuck on the HVAC controls. I tried to scrape it off, but it is not a film. Any idea how to change the colors, and do you have pics of the mod.

anyone know how to bypass this problem? EDIT: Well I went ahead and sharpied the green plastic red and it worked just fine, i am now all red, the only thing is the fact that it isnt really that bright so I am going to have to solder in some lights like the other guide showed. I just want to clarify that the green does not matter. Last edited by Flipgod; 11-12-2006 at 10:11 PM. Reason: Green plastic is not a problem. |

Guys,
I am UK based and have just seen this thread. I am trying to do the same thing with my Impreza STi 2005 Type UK. I have converted the door switches and also the light adjuster, fog light and IC water spray buttons. I am looking to do the HVAC next. I have the same problem that has been posted before. I have taken the controls apart and they are made from green plastic. Basically I need to know what to do to convert these to blue. I am not sure what to do. Any help of pictures would be great. Many Thanks Si |
