It's quite sad when a company that has been building cars for nearly 100 years has to get companies in communist countries to build cars for them. Sad. Very, very sad.

^^never thought about it that way but you are absolutely right. They are just going to steal designs and technology, and in 20 years they are going to buy out american car companies outright.
remember that US spy plane that had to land in china after crashing into a chinese jet years ago? they stripped it down and are probably hopefully still trying to reverse engineer it....like the russians did with all the engines/tech that they "borrowed" after WW2. the chinese are so hungry that they are willing to do/try anything to gain an edge and make a buck. And that is why the US companies are screwed. Not enough hunger and no foresight...oh yah and we also have laws and safety regs to deal with. |

Well it's not like they could not buy one and strip it down.

China doesn't recoginise international patent laws. Therefore, anything that's patented they have direct access (since one of the stipulents of getting a patent is 'full discloseure such that a person of resonable compentents could replicate the design') to and can copy. And do copy. Quite poorly too, generally speaking. There's no explicit need for them to make agreements with anyone.
That having been said, when they actually put their minds to something, and don't try to make a cheap knockoff, they actually make pretty good stuff. Fromt what auto reviews I've read of chinese cars, they tend to be pretty favorable. So yes, this is Crysler that wants this, not GWM. They need a cheap source of labor and technology. And they need good sub-compacts for the current global economy. Chinese motor companies do both of those things very well, and are a lot easier (and cheaper) to get into bed with than Japanese marques. The big three are all trying different things to keep themselves afloat. This is what Crysler is doing. |

Death trap... on bicycle tires. On a positive note, I saw a guy on a motorcycle get ran complete over by a chery, and he lived to stand up and cuss out the other driver.
