Few questions for you locals:
My wife is potentially going to do her PhD at UBC, and I wanted to know a few things:
1) Where would you recommend living in the area? We visited about two years ago and stayed around in different b&bs, and really enjoyed Point Grey, but it looks to be fairly pricey. $ will depend on question 2. 2) How difficult is it for folks from the US to get a work visa? I am finishing my MBA from a top 20 US program, so hopefully I should be fairly marketable. Also, how is the work environment in Vancouver? What are hours like? Does anyone know anything about Canada's bankruptcy/fraud investigations and/or restructuring? 3) Can we bring our 2 stis? We are pretty excited, but will not know till early 2010. But I want to plan ahead. Thanks!!!

post-2010 is a good time to move here.
1) Best value for location in my opinion is burnaby or south vancouver. The commute to UBC from these areas is approximately 20-45mins, and downtown where you will most likely work is the same time via public transit. You most likely will not drive as much as you plan to. 2) I dont think you will have a problem 3) Why wouldn't you? Good luck! 3) |

Bringing your STi's here won't be an issue. Check out riv.ca for what you need done.
Basiclly, you just need a release letter from Subaru USA stating the car is free from all factory recalls etc, then just contact the boarder you will be crossing and let them know you will be taking a car out of the country. ( I think you would need to notify US and Canada Customs IIRC) |

1. depends on how much you want to spend. If you looking to rent and want a place that is really convienient look at Fairview Slopes. Fairview slopes lines false creek and is right below Broadway which has a lot of stores, offices, restaurants lining it. The bus that travels directly to UBC takes about 30 minutes. Downtown is just 10 minutes away by bus. Driving to ubc will probably take 20 min and driving to downtown would be 5 minutes.
Another area that has a lot of condos and low rise apartments is Marpole. I would say rent is slightly less then fairview. Theres several blocks of small stores and restaurants. Maybe check out Yaletown if you got money. All relatively new apartments that line the outside edge of downtown with water on the other side. Mostly young professionals (yuppies) who live in this area or older couples who are downsizing. Hip, vibrant and boutique. NOT cheap though ie. an extra parking spot may cost you close to 30grand. these areas are all in the city of Vancouver. Which are all more costly then the cities beside. Just browse on Craigslist. 2. I would say there are jobs to be found, just gotta snoop around. I don't really know much about work visas. The work environment i would say are pretty standard, but you could find yourself at work early at like 6 am due to the fact that we are on the westcoast and lotta business are in the east, but that totally depends on industry. Don't know too much about the whole recession thing but its not as bad as the states i think. Think smaller scale i guess. 3. Of course you can import your STi's. mine is from Seattle =) hope this helps. and good luck |

I just happen to live on UBC campus as my wife is finishing up her M.D.
There are a few nice places to live on campus, for instance, most of the people in our building are older professionals. Being a transit hub, you can get downtown from UBC in about 30min, and you're usually going against traffic. Bonus here is that only one car is really necessary, which will supplement any extra rent (although it's pretty much the same everywhere in the city). There's a large park, several options for beach access close by, and pretty much everything you need grocery-wise withing walking distance. Additionally, our apartment is in an older building so it's massive by modern standards. If I was you, I'd plan to live close to the place of work/study of whomever is going to be working the weirdest hours. |

Hey, thanks for all the great information!
I am going to run with this info and do some more research. Hopefully I will be showing up at a meet in fall of 2010. |

When I drove to LA, I attended one of your mini meets throughout the week.
Those meets already shadow our big organized ones |

As for bringing your car into canada it really depends on how long you are going to be staying the country, or what kind of insurance coverage you already have or want. I think you only need to contact us customs if you plan on exporting from the states and importing to canada (moving your cars from the US to canadian market). Or you can just keep them plated for california and as long as your are a US resident it's legal for you to drive it up here, just not for any canadians to drive.

IIRC, you need to transfer the car over to BC plates if you plan on living here for an extended amount of time.

Ahh yeah, you're right, because it's based on residency not citizenship. So as a temporary resident of canada you would need to import it.

If you are going to rent, I recommend Kitsilano. 3 minutes to Down Town without all the down town hassle.
I lived there for a year right at the end of Kits Beach on Cornwall Ave and it was a blast. Be warned, it's pretty trendy. Lots of hot women wearing yoga pants. Can be distracting. I've lived on and off in Richmond for over 30 years and I love it, and I'll live here for the rest of my life, but it's pretty infamous in Canada. I'll let you figure out why when you get here. |
