Making your own wrist pin pulling tools
Well, I finally pulled the pistons out of an actual 2.0 WRX block. Got everything torn down and what do I see? Wacky wrist pins.
So I do a little NASIOC search, get a written idea from 2006, proceed to make it, and presto, it works. I took 1/4 rod (happened to be threaded, thats all I had lying around), and welded a big blob on the end. Then I ground the crap out of the back side, and the blob, till the blob measured .310 in the calipers. Notice that the blob is about 1/2 the side of the rod itself. Also notice that there is a slight taper on the rod where the blob is. What this does is make the rod have to be twisted and angled as you get it through the hole for maximum attack. Once the blob is through, push it further in so you can get that 1/16th thick wire (whatever) pushed through as well on the BACKside of the rod. Then pull the rod back out. Now the blob wedges itself into the back side of the taper and you are able to pull the pin out. Works pretty damn swell. The next pin puller.... I took 3/8" rod, bent a 90 in it as sharp as I could, wailed upon it with a big ass hammer to encouraged even more of a 90%, and then attacked it with an air disc grinder. I cut the inside of the 90% until it was very square. And the backside and actual side I kept grinding down until the whole thing fit through an STI wrist pin. STI wrist pin openings are smaller than regular wrist pins and 3/8 rod won't fit, therefore the need for the grinding. On the end of the 3/8, I bent the rod so I can whack it with a heavy hammer. Sometimes you need ALOT OF FORCE to pop out 200,000 mile wrist pins. Here is a video of pulling out the 2nd style wrist pins. I guess I will have to make another for the WRX soon. http://www.vincentfurniture.com/phot...pistonpull.wmv

I use a piece of wire that was used to contain the spring on my aluminum jack. Just flattened one of the J bends enough to leave a decent lip and catch the pins for a quick easy yank.

Heh I used a coat hanger that I bent to have a little lip. Of course this took a few tries, and a few coat hangers

Or insert a long screwdriver from the opposite access hole and push the pin out.

I use thin metal dowel rods from home depot. Bend the tip with some vise-grips, dremmel it down to fit, then bend the other end to make a handle. Works great!

I use a flat shisk for shiskabobs and bend the tip at a 90 and pull out. works great.

I just stuck a screwdriver in mine, tilted it slightly to make a compressive fit, and pulled it out... They all slid out fine.

You guys are lucky! When I did my ej22t block it was in there very tight. I made a tool much like Doug's but I welded on a large washer to the end so I could use a pry bar to pull them out.
When I did my ej257 the wrist pins slid out fairly easily. |

Nice. I normally just use a heli-coil drill bit (the threads go the wrong way). I tap it into the wrist pin a little then twist and the pin comes right out.
That's all I use the tool for (esp considering heli-coils don't work for ish IMO). |

Next solution was go to Home Depot with a sample wrist pin and buy some expansion bolts with sleeves. This worked just fine. I slip them in there, hold the body in place with some needlenose and tigthen the bolt to tighten. A single yank with the vise grips on the end of the bolt usually suffices. I get about 3-4 uses per bolt before they are trashed, but hey, they are like 42 cents each. But then I came across a block with a different size ID on the pin. Another trip to Home Depot and some guessing and problem solved. Though I will say that if Doug wanted to make an extra one and bill me for it, I'd happily give it a good home... |
