BOOM! Jersey put in check. haha
So my replacement windshield came in today. I'm getting it swapped tomorrow and having some aqua repel stuff put on it. We'll see how well it do. Later I'm having the window tinted to 40%. We'll see how long that lasts. I'm making a plan to road trip to my family reunion in Redwood Valley, CA, on Saturday, May 11th. I'm thinking of leaving Alaska early, early Wednesday. I've road tripped from the Lower 48 twice before. It's nice. It's a long trip, though. West Canada be boring. Anyways, that's the plan for the BRZ so far. If I can't take the time off work (which I doubt), then I'll be flying down. It costs around $650 to fly down and back to the Lower 48. For not even twice that I can have a fun road trip memory. What's your $0.02? |

well, if you dont think you will hit a lot of bad weather then brz + camera FOR SURE. however just because it cheaper doesn't mean its the smartest thing to do. we want you to be safe buddy! if you're reasonably sure you can safely do this trip, i see no need not to. how long of a drive is it anyway? gonna do it alone, and just stop in random hotels over night? or gonna cuddle up with the heated seats on? The weather should be fine in May. I've done the roadtrip twice before, but coming from the Lower 48. Last time was in 2009 when I picked up the Forester from Utah. With a loaded Forester that got about 26 MPG highway and only getting several hours of sleep it took us barely two days to get through Canada. The BRZ gets mid-30's easily and is much, much swifter on the roads. I do need a legit camera of my own. I'm still interested in your's, Jive. I plan on going alone since I don't have any friends that would be able to take off with me at that time. My family up here MIGHT drive down, too, but most likely earlier and slower than I would like. I'm totally fine with going solo. It's not that it's cheaper, since wear and tear on the car, mileage, gas prices, etc. It's just that I'm 28 and single with disposable income, a flexible job and a hot car, so I'd like to take as many adventures as possible before I completely settle down. I'd wing it concerning where to sleep. We slept in the Forester last time and only got 3 hours of sleep at the most. Not sure if I'd trust the Subaru battery to keep my seat warmers on throughout the night. haha By May I'll most likely have the stock unit replaced, so I'll need to either buy a Garmin or use my SGSIII. The biggest hiccup is getting a passport. I'm going to apply for it within the week. Last time in 2009 my passport request was denied the same week I was flying out to go drive the Forester back up. I brought my ID, birth certificate and everything. No hassle until I tried to get into Alaska. The kid was pissed that I didn't have a proper passport. No clue why I was denied, but I need to get it figured out. I assume the government doesn't like that I have four names. Too ethnic. |

Google Maps estimates 3,039 miles from Anchorage, Alaska to Redwood Valley, California, at 59 hours trip time. I'm sure I'll cute a few hours off that total, but yeah, it's a trip. Going to Fairbanks, Alaska, it's 330+ miles and mostly uphill. It takes the casual driver with family 5 to 5.75 hours. It takes me about 4 to 4.5 hours to make the same trip. I figure 1,000 miles a day is fine, but pushing it would be adding another 200-400 miles. Depending on how bored I get in Canada will determine if I pushed it or not.

Getting through Canada is the biggest struggle, CJ.
Once I'm with family and friends, I don't mind chilling. There's pretty much nothing to see driving through Canada, honestly. I did see some weird-looking elk, but nothing too picturesque. Coming from Alaska, it's tough to be impressed by western Canada. |

? My experience has been more like seven hours for a casual driver with family and closer to five for myself with relatively spirited driving. To do that distance in four hours you would have to be AVERAGING nearly 90mph...

I keep it steady. Actually, you're right, now that I think about it. 4 hours is cray. But 7 hours is insane, Davin. Never in my entire life have I heard of 7 hours. I think back in the 60's and 70's people used to say 7 hours, but even my saintly mother doesn't take 7 hours. Closer to 6 for her.
Not talking out of my butt, it's more like 4.75 hours if I can get around enough people. Plus I don't stop very often to use the bathroom. |

Even after several thousand miles and days on the road? Hmmm.... I know my feet stink after a bit. Smaller cars make it worse.

Otherwise April 6th is a good time to leave Alaska, but terrible time for anything else in my life. I plan on being in New York City in October of 2013, too. |

As far as your wheels, 19's are one step from 20's which is one step from building a donk. Please don't make the brz a donk lol. Seriously though remember with the drop and good quality tires with a good sidewall 40/45 17's and 18's will fill up that wheel well good. |

To me there's a huge difference between 20" wheels and 19" wheels. vs It appears to me that the bias really comes down to cost. Most people aren't willing to pay extra for 19" wheels AND tires. Plus resale value since not many cars can rock 19" 5x100 wheels. Aesthetically I think 19" LOOKS more "racer" than "ricer", while 20" is definitely overkill. 18" is safe and a crowd-pleaser while 17" is more of a technical (functional) size. *shrug* I'll probably go for 19" just to spite you guys. Mwahahahaha!!!! |

The only "racer" looking car of that group is the one with slicks parked at the track.. and even then it looks like someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Spend some real time at a track before you make up your mind about ricer vs racer. |
