Post your used oil analysis (UOA's) here!

Missed this. No, I don't recall any. Castrol 5W-50 is even a little thicker than M1 15W-50 at 100C, but I suspect it has more viscosity modifiers and would shear to a 40 grade in a shorter interval than M1 15W-50. Yep- looks good fadetoblack! |

2012 Subaru WRX.
"Additional Info" on some of the UOA's have some additional details of the test setup. Here is a lot of details about my car. I purchased the car new, followed Subaru's engine break in exactly as stated (never doing one speed for much time, keeping the RPM's varying, not revving past 3,000 RPM's for first 1,000 miles). I broke in the engine in 2 days (yea, 1,000 miles in two days), and immediately changed the oil to Mobil1 Extended Performance 5w30, changed at 3,000 miles for the first two years (except for the one oil change at the dealership, the last UOA posted). I've always used Napa Gold air filters. I don't race, I don't do any hard launches. My only engine mod is the Accessport performance tune. When I start the engine (cold) I wait until the RPM's drop below 1,500 before moving the vehicle. I don't allow the engine to go over 3,000RPM's until it is at normal operating temperature. I now do changes with Castrol Extended Performance (with titanium) 5w30 every 5,000 or just before. If the weather has been really bad I will change it early (damn sand storms). I like that it has a good ZDDP package, as well as titanium. Titanium is known to bond to the metal, creating a protective surface coating on the metal. I use Mobil1 Extended Performance oil filters. I've been using a magnetic drain plug since the car was about 6 months old. I've yet to clean the shavings off and as of a month ago the magnet just has a very fine black coating from what are likely shavings. It isnt even enough to feel, I wiped my finger on the magnet and can't feel or see anything. After the oil is done draining while changing the oil. I will run one quart of oil through to rinse out the oil pan. After cutting open a lot of oil filters. I've decided that for myself, for my vehicle, Mobil1 Extended Performance oil filters are the best. Purolator Pure 1 are also excellent, and Napa Gold oil filters as well. However I don't like the bypass valve seal on the Napa Gold oil filter (metal on metal, large surface), and it has less filter media due to the size of the bypass valve. The Purolator Pure 1 is a great filter internally, it was however more fiberous than the Mobil filter, and I don't want little fibers in my oil. Try as I might, I can't find the nominal micron rating for the Mobil filter. I've called them, I've called Champion Labs, I can't get an answer. I was told by a Champion Labs tech, who has worked there for many years, that they only assemble the filter. Mobil sends them the parts. Champion Labs has been asking for the nominal micron rating and Mobil has yet to give them an answer. However, due to my UOA results, the Mobil filter seems to be working just fine. Every few months I will run some Seafoam (or Redline fuel system treatment) through the gas tank. I have never used the spray on this engine. A few months ago I ran a gallon of Seafoam with a full tank of gas. The car runs the same, I didn't notice any difference in performance. I have a turbo timer set to 30 seconds, I installed it after about 6 months owning the car (got tired of sitting in it letting it idle after every trip). The car is now about to hit 120,000 miles and it doesn't consume any oil. It's full when it's filled, and it's just under the full line when it is to be drained. I have had zero issues with the engine, and it runs like new. Last edited by SMoLiK9; 05-15-2016 at 10:31 PM. Reason: correction |

Thank you. I'm not sure I understand your question, I'm unfamiliar with the acronym "OTS". I'm running the Stage 1 ACN91 tune (Cobb AP). Other than that the engine is bone stock. I am adamant about using Chevron, Texaco, Shell, Mobil gasoline (in that order), 91 octane. I never fill up with any other fuel unless it's an emergency, and then I will only put a half tank. OTS is the Off The Shelf tune that the AP came with (as opposed to a protune or custom tune).

Ah, yea. I just keep up to date with the ACN91 tune from the Cobb website. I've had my race cars in the past, spending all my money on mods. Now I'm more concerned with the vehicles reliability and resale value for a future upgrade. This car has enough power for the mountain/coastal runs I do from time to time. Upgrading the sway bars, end links, brakes, brake lines and the tune have made this car a lot of fun and still very reliable. Just paid it off last month, already looking to get something else.

Got my latest UOA on Amsoil SS 5w30. Switched to Amsoil Euro 5W40 on this oil change so we will see what that one says. Car started to knock at 1700 rpms during cold start after sitting for a few days. Noise went away after 10-15 seconds. Haven't been able to replicate it again. Car drives fine and oil pressures are good. Noticed the dealer overfilled the oil by quite a bit so i'll be pulling some out tonight. |

This is my first oil change on my built motor. I'll also add had that I had a cam failure, so likely much of the metals are from that. We also consider that replacing the cams took a second top end re-build. So we are taking this all with a grain of salt at the moment. The next couple of intervals will paint a better picture obviously.

Silver in 2010 STI with 105K
Oil gurus:
Here's my last Blackstone report. I know Mobil 1 5W-30 is not popular on NASIOC but oil reports for my 2002 & 2006 WRXs were perfect using it, even with autocrossing and rallycrossing in Washington DC area heat. Previous reports for the STI were pretty much perfect too, but recently the silver has been rising. Background: - Autocross 12 - 15 times per year in SCCA B-Street class, so no engine mods but FSB, Bilsteins, and 265/35/18 ZII+ StarSpecs - Daily driver, commuting in DC traffic, so 2+ hours per day at low speed, low RPM - 105K on stock engine, tranny - Never burns oil between ~ 3,500 mile changes - Noticed RPM dropped below 700 sometimes while clutching in/out for traffic; now trying be more careful to keep RPM up during commute. I was considering an Accusump to maintain oil pressure. Thoughts? Thanks, Harry |

Harry - Silver is strange. There are people that have no issues when silver is only slightly elevated, and there are others that have had bearing failure with silver as low as 6 ppm's.
Keep an eye on it. |

Last UOA on Amsoil Euro 5w40. Same story as before. Car runs fine still with no oil consumption or pressure drops. Keep in keeping on. |

Forgot to post this one up after I got it.
First sample with a weekend of AutoX'n on it. Running great on Mobil One 0w40 and happy to finally have the silver gone. |

That was a long read, after all of this it still seems there is no real consensus. PPP seems to have some of the best UOA's

Wow, didn't realize the ZDDP was that low on SS 0W40. The boron is providing anti-wear protection though.
