LOL. So we cvt drivers are stupid?

It appears CVT owners can get the EPA numbers. 8 people have posted at:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find....n=sbs&id=31721
2012 Impreza 2.0 with CVT.

low of 25 high of 36. Average of 29.8mpg

Without looking at each one individually, I doubt anyone of them is 100% city or 100% highway. So in general, the average should come out near the EPA Combined MPG.

I have over 14,000 miles on my CVT and typically get 32 to 36mpg. While never getting less than 30mpg calculated and driving with the flow of traffic.

No, just apparently complainers. You already tested the car at 36mpg at 60mph so you are not dumb, you know that the EPA numbers are achievable.

So much for the warranty complaint. Why is this thread still going?

Sorry, I don't understand what you are getting at. If you hammer the accelerator on any car, only drive it short distances starting with a cold engine, or drive it faster than 55mph, the MPG's go down.

The fact that you notice this MPG decline with your impreza is not news to anyone but you, and probably accounts for the fact that Consumer Reports is not complaining about the MPG's from their testing of the Impreza.

Neither Subaru nor the EPA provide any guarantee that you can achieve the MPG's stated no matter how you decide to drive the car. No manufacturer does.

Just look at the chart on fuelly. Probably the best stats we will get short of a massive controlled experiment. It's a bell curve with the peak at 29 mpg. Get over it already.

Overall getting about four or five MPG's more now (hand calculated) in a urban environment than I did with my previous 2008 OBS w/4AT. Not as good as I expected when I ordered it; however, overall, the 2012 Impreza Sport Limited is a much better car, IMHO. The 2012 does have a nasty habit of "engine braking" when going downhill with the foot off the gas at about 25-40 MPH (RPM goes above 2.3K). I just "blip" it into the next higher gear and all is well after that action.

Stevehnm & Zeeper's comments provide some entertainment; however, appear to be more of a pointless "spat".

If I am careful and my son does not drive the car, I can attain the average ranges posted on the sticker - sometimes a bit more. But what the heck, drive it like you stole it and have fun (just don't do it when that blue light is on) - this coming from an old man.

Default Update...sorta

So I had previously shared a negative review of my 2012 Impreza HB sport automatic, and wanted to add an update to those who are also disappointed with their mileage.

I switched cars with my wife in early November and have been driving our 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD* v6 since. She likes the smaller subi, and I like the larger santa fe, especially with when I got 28-29 mpg in the Impreza. (*the Santa Fe is essentially a FWD that engages AWD with rear slippage.)

As I mentioned in my first post (in more detail), I am conscious of efficiency when I drive, ~ 75 % of my miles are on an Interstate, and I rarely am in traffic. I have always got good mileage from my cars, including the last one I had, an 09 Versa HB rated for HWY at 33mpg. I averaged 33 - 34 all around with a high of 37.

The update is two parts:
1. I had the car serviced due to recall of a small part. I also requested they look into the mileage and transmission downshifting. They did, and said all was normal and that my mileage may improve as the car breaks in. It has over 4,000 miles now. When I had a one on one with the service guy, he towed the line that my 28mpg was within spec, but did admit my mileage was on the low side given my drive. The mechanics claimed the tranny downshifting is normal.

2. My wife is getting 21-22 mpg from the Impreza. Her driving is more hills and more city driving, though that is still lower than what I thought it would get. She got 19 from her Santa Fe. I now get 24.3 from the Santa Fe (rated 20 - 26), and I drive the Santa Fe faster/harder at times.

I have contacted Subaru and the EPA. If you are disappointed with your Impreza, please do the same.

Averaging 26.14 mpg over the past 860 miles (miles traveled divided by gallons of gas used, not the display readout). 5 Speed Sport Premium, about 50/50 highway/city

I have to agree. I followed the recommended link and took the data to the next level. To reproduce it here would a bit, so perhaps the simplest thing is to search on my user ID bpeterson272 and look at the plots.

Bottom line estimates are:

5-spd 31.0 highway / 23.3 city
CVT 29.5 highway / 23.5 city

5-speed manual transmission. The average mileage is a function only of the % city driving.

At 0% city driving the average driver should anticipate 31 mpg. 95% of all drivers should range between 26.4 – 35.6 mpg. This says only 2.5% drivers will achieve the EPA highway estimate or higher.

Each 10% increment of city driving will reduce the mileage 0.77 mpg.

At 100% city driving the average driver should anticipate 23.3 mpg.

CVT automatic transmission. The average mileage is a function of both % city driving and the total number of miles driven (rather interesting and unanticipated).

At 0% city driving and 0 miles on the car the average driver should anticipate 29.5 mpg. 95% of all drivers should range between 24.7 – 34.3 mpg. Only 0.15% of drivers will achieve the EPA highway estimate or higher.

Each 10% increment of city driving will reduce the mileage 0.60 mpg.

At 100% city driving the average driver should anticipate 23.5 mpg. For each 1000 miles driven the average fuel economy appears to increase 0.16 mpg up to 15000 miles where the data stops.

% city driving explains only 20% of the variation, leaving 80% to the "other" category. For the CVT, total miles driven explain another 10% of the variation, still leaving 70% in the "other" category. Not particularly impressive.

Lastly there is no observable break-in mileage change for the manual transmission.

There is a 1 mpg break-in for the CVT that shows up over time and takes about 7000 miles to develop. The data is sparse at higher miles driven so can't say if it flattens out or continues on for a while before it flattens out. My plots suggest it continues. I suppose the transmission has a period of time over which belt slippage is reduced although I imagine there are other explanations possible.

At 50/50 I calculate an estimated average of 27.1 mpg, so your experience is very close to the average mileage of others with a manual transmission. See post just north of yours for more.

I mostly make short trips less than twenty miles in 45mph zones.
Which Amsoil are you using? I may go ahead and switch over, as my cvt gets about 8 mpg worse than my identically rated Corolla that's been running Amsoil Signature Series for over 150,000 miles, with an average change interval of about 20,000 miles.

Here's my two cents:

I drive a 2008 Impreza Outback Sport (19/27?) and have put on 94,000 miles. 90% of my miles are highway driving and have cruise control set at 70mph. I've been averaging about 26 mpg since I bought the car.

My 08 Impreza is in the shop so I've been renting a 2013 Impreza for the past 4 days. Again, I do 90% highway with the cruise set at 70 mph. I've been averaging 33 mpg. Its not quite close enough to the advertised 36 mph as I would've liked but I am confident that it is because the rental only has 1300 miles on it.

Food for thought.

I now have 5,000 miles on my 2012 Impreza Sport premium 5 door with auto tranny. I drive it like a little old man and the best I get on the road and in town shows 26.8 MPG. That's what the digital readout says. WRONG. That readout is no way close. I filled up and my actual mileage was 24.2 MPG. I have checked this a few times and the digital readout is always a couple MPG higher than actual. I'm very disappointed in the mileage. Best I ever had on the highway is 33 MPH on digital readout but 31 in actual calculations. So I get 24 city/road and 31 road. That sucks! I'm going to go to the dealer where I bought the car and ask why. Not close to what it should get. Might sell it and find a car that gets good mileage.

You're not alone. The only thing is that mine shows the same difference in actual mpg vs. the display, but when you consider how far the odometer is off combined with what it will show when the tires are worn down, it's pretty close. Check it with a GPS. There have been several car magazine reviews, but not very many that actually checked the mpg. The ones that checked it found it came way short of claimed. Even Consumer Reports, in their comparison of real world mpg's of other cars, report that the Impreza was woefully bad in mpg. The cvt is bad - I don't know about the 5 speed since I don't have one, but I hear it's not too far off, and actually maybe better in real world mpg's.

how many miles/year do you drive? if your only reasoning for wanting to sell is MPG being 5 less than advertised then are you prepared to take the depreciation hit? the reason i ask is i think the standard depreciation hit is probably in the 4K range, if you are averaging 5mpg combined less (my guess, unless your numbers account for odometer error, then you are at 6mpg less), and if you drive 15,000 miles/year your current combined average will cost you 400/year more. which will take 10 years to make up (8 years @ 6mpg less @ average of 4/gallon)

looks like you live in a nice mountainous area according to google topograhical map of your area 2012subisport. inclines affect your fuel economy also your car is fairly new so keep that in consideration.

My car is used exclusively in the city....about 20 miles each way to school, 4-days per week and various shorter trips to WM, etc. Car gets consistently 27-28 mpg. Took it on a road trip to get a clear bra installed on the front...360 mile round trip from Augusta, GA to Charleston, SC...averaged 36 mpg. Really no complaints on the mileage.

That's a good point, discounting inflation and what you could get out of that money doing something else with it, which is anybody's guess at this point. If you're not driving it a lot it would not make sense to get rid of it. It's a good car, and if the miles you drive aren't that extensive you might be better off cutting your losses. Of course you could always write Consumer Reports etc. and maybe end up getting some relief from Subaru.

I have a 2013 sport limited and get close to epa estimates. From what I see they test highway speeds at 55-60 mph. I can drive on hwy at 55 and get an average of 45 mpg all day long. If I bump it up to 70 I get around 33 mpg. In town is averaging 23, but u tend to accelerate and brake harder than recommended.

Is that hand calculated or the numbers on the dash? My dash numbers were off by about 5/6%. I had the dealer adjust the dash down by 6% and now it reads just a tad low.

Default CVT numbers

I have a 2013 Impreza with CVT (virtually unchanged from the 2012 model) and the best figures I have had so far with the car include 23 city and 31 highway, whereas my average gas mileage in mixed driving is about 24.5.

Can they do that with the '13? The service manager at my dealer says no, but then again he's an a$$hole.

I believe so. It should be one of the Dealer Adjustment options listed in the user's manual. My Dealer had a heck of a time finding it in their on-line service manual. They can also adjust the outside temp display in the same manner.

Yes mine are from dash I checked it against real calculations when it was fairly new and it was spot on. I will recheck now that you have said this. I am wondering if its changed.
