I got my replacement fitting today, I was VERY careful on the install and threaded everything by hand first. I started the car and everything was fine. I was backing around my other car in my driveway and I head a pop and a loss of power steering. I looked and the teflon line had burst through the fitting. I redid the line with 2mm of teflon line exposed past the stainless instead of 4mm which I did before. The teflon line fits into a brass compression fitting that gets crushed by the end. Now I have about 2 full quarts of ATF in my driveway. I drove around a bit before I had the courage to go full lock. I drove for about 20 minutes to burn off all of the ATF from my engine bay. All of the people in the lane behind me had to get over because of all the smoke. Eventually I turned it back and forth to full lock and it held fine. It was dark so I couln't tell if there were any leaks. Tomorrow I will spray brake cleaner on all of the fittings and see if there is leakage anywhere. One other note of interest is you will have to notch the belt guard since the 90 degree fitting is too tall. I will try to take some pics at lunch tomorrow.

^^We cut the teflon line and the SS line the exact same length. Then shove the teflon into the brass compression fitting and the SS over the fitting. Then shoved it all into the end of the AN fitting and tightened it down. I believe the SS being compressed between the AN fitting and that brass compression fitting it what keeps it all together. Good to hear its working out so far!

One thing I just remembered, take the O ring out of this part.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

Luckily I found it in the line before it got a change to circulate around.

^^Good to know.

Did you teflon tape any of the fittings or just tighten them down till they were tight?

Here are the pictures to prove it. I've done this same thing quite a few times, except instead of using AM fittings, I reuse the factory rack side (The bent metal pieces that attach to the rack itself, and just use a hydraulic crimping machine to crimp everything down. My pressure line is a stainless steel jacketed teflon lined hose for strength, and my return line is rubber to allow it to fit onto the fluid resevoir. There is very little pressure in the return, so a steel braided rubber line works fine. The restrictor in the PRESSURE line serves two purposes. It restricts pressure and acts as a silencer. Without that piece, fluid runs at too high of a pressure and the power steering line will actually make alot of noise, cause the pump to make noise because it sucks up aerrated fluid from the bottle, and it will cause your power steering to be very jerky and most of the time, it will be hard to steer..

Here are pictures for proof.

So it's not actually a restrictor, it's just a smaller diameter hose??

What do you think the inside diameter of that steel flex line is? Just curious as the SS teflon line I provided the link for in the first post looks to be about the same diameter.

i will measure the diameter tomorrow morning when i get back into the shop, but if i had to guess diameter i would have to say about 1/8 to 3/16 give or take.

so a -6 an teflon line should work, that looks to be about the same size. Also instead if using a 90 degree bend fitting at the pump you can get banjo an fittings, this would give more restriction than the 90 and also allow you to no trim the belt cover. I seen other member use this, like jvcastillo

its not a restrictor ...

the pump has a pressure valve.. inside the pump the port that feeds the line is smaller than the reinforcing strand in the pict above

its a pretty elegant design as the pressure goes up it closes off the flow to the lines (no ps at high rpm)

To bring this thread back...

I'm considering doing this. Is the mod working for everyone that has done this? Any other tips and tricks learned from the experience or different parts ultimately utilized, etc.?

Sorry I didn't update the thread. I actually forgot about it. Yes, it does work. I was able to make the straight fitting work. I didn't buy the 45 degree fitting like salt did.

I have a little bit leaking at the fitting by the pump....between the blue fitting and the 90 degree fitting. But its barely noticeable. I will probably take it apart and use some teflon tape to try and seal it up. But other than that, it works great.

Also, to make a little more room to bring everything down further and possibly fit the black belt cover on without cutting it, there is a fitting on the actual power steering pump that is stock. You can remove that fitting and the blue Earls fitting screws right in.....just remember to take the o-ring off the stock fitting and put it on the blue Earls fitting.

summit sells banjo fittings...instead of going for the teflon tape on the blue fitting, you might wanna hit up the banjo?

Thanks so much for this thread: it's EXACTLY what I was looking for! I had power steering lines hacked together by a local guy and he did a crap job, so they leak. I'm going to go this route and make my own out of stainless...thanks so much for taking the guess work out of the lines and fittings!

I think I'm going to make the return line SS as well, however. I also need to make the pump intake line stainless, as mine is leaking a bunch...so I guess it'll be 100***37; stainless system if I can find hoses big enough to go from the resevoir to the pump.

thanks again...this is great info!!!

would the regular summit brand hoses work? I think power steering systems are roughly 250psi...and the summit hoses hold 1000. The russel ones posted in the first post are rated to 2500psi....but that seems like overkill.

Glad this could be of help to you. I think we tried to look for banjo bolts first, but couldn't find the correct thread pitch.

apparently reading comp > you because if you read the rest of the thread, I said it works just fine on my car.

The line I used was teflon line which the guy at Summit said is designed for power steering fluid. I think the line in the link you posted is rubber. All the fittings I posted in the first post are for teflon line. You will need fittings for rubber lines if you go with that line.

FWIW, p/s systems run in the 1100-1500 psi range.

I won't say "all" but the Ford ones I have tested, that's the relief pressure. I increased my chevy one from 1100-1375 because i run a 12,000lb winch on it

While I've got someones attention ...

How about the one big fat hose that goes from the resevoir to the pump? Mine is leftover coolant hose that's corroding quickly...does anyone know the specs on the hose? I could get another one from the dealer, but it'd be more fun to make it stainless like the rest of the system.

How accessible is the connection at the bottom(under the engine) when the engine is in place? I am not rotated but that metal PS line is a PITA with my APS inlet. A SS solution would be great but I'm not going to pull the engine for it.
