Nope, But I took it out yesterday. It looked to have some garbage (corrosion?) on the end of the sensor. I cleaned it with CRC Electrical Connection spray.
Then, I re-installed it. Immediately it idled better, ran stronger, and got rid of my hesitation from 2000-3000rpms. Looks like I saved a few bucks.

That's good. I tried that with mine but it didn't help. Try using some dialectric grease at the connections as well.

Well, as it turns out, the sensor is located directly underneath the Oil Fill Tube.
Great. So, when the tech at the dealership impatiently pours oil, the excess can be more detrimental than we think. |

Update: I installed a new CPS last month and it ran fine. Yesterday i got it again. Replaced the CPS, cleared the CEL and it pops back up again. When i start my car it idles a little rough at first and then smooths out as i take off.

bringing this back from the dead.
I just had a new 2.0 put in and put around 3k miles on it and BAM!!!. CEL comes on and I get this code. I replaced the CPS and cleared the code and it ran worse than it did before, barly even started. So I put the old one back in and it was gone. I drove around for a few miles with the old one and without getting on the gas and it was fine. Once I hit over 3500rpm on WOT, CEL flips back on. I have no clue what is going on. Someone on here mentioned using a small washer as a shim for the sensor but there was never one on there. Please HELP!! |

i had this same problem. cel one night, i ran to the auto store, replaced it, drove home. I took off for work the next day, the car died and wouldnt turn over again without sounding aweful. I troubleshot wires, sensors, and whatever else i could get in to. Turns out, the subaru dealership mechanics discovered the timing belt had jumped teeth on 2 of the cam pulleys. They said it was a miracle i didnt bend a valve. Id bet if you get a the timing looked at, you will save your motor. just my experience with this CEL.

A bad alternator will also cause this CEL. This happened to me.

I recently got a CE light code and it threw me the code P0340 and it says camshaft position sensor A circuit bank 1 or single sensor. I have a 02 Subaru wrx impreza. I recently ordered a new sensor, but I would like to know what the problem could be. Also, I'm having a hard time identifying where the camshaft position sensor is at. Can someone please pinpoint the location for me? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Help
I am also having problems with my car it was running fine as I was driving back to my house I shifted from first to second in between gears I lost engine power and couldn't get it to start again at idle with the throttle down and 3ooo rims I could get it to run but had a little Dark smoke coming out started throwing misfire codes on all four and a running rich code. After I got it home I couldn't get it started at all I disconnected the mass air flow sensor and it will run first turn of the key but back fires I replaced MAS and still nothing. I need help I also replaced plugs with no difference and put fuel cleaner in. Everyone keeps saying ins my ignition coils or cam sensors. Would like to get some more input before I start replacing other pointless stuff. |

Has anybody gotten this code with a backfire? I recently took my 04 sti to the subaru place to put in a new clutch. When I got it back, my ac wasn't working and the engine would bog down then backfire and throw the cam position sensor code. Car seems to run fine other than random bog/backfire combo. 85k miles on it.

I've had this problem so I reflashed the ECU and it went away for like 2 months up until I changed the sensor completely

I've heard that it seems to happen when the timing belt stretches.
Change timing your belt to pink sti type |

I got the P0340 about two months ago on my 08 LGT. Pulled the connector off and found a corroded terminal that had broken off. Replaced the sensor and clean coneector. Car was fine for two weeks then tripped the light again. I cleared the light and it stayed off for 3 weeks. Last week the light tripped again and I couldn't refire the car till a hard code set and car was in limp mode. I again cleaned terminals and inspected the wiring and sensor, cleared code and was fine for a week, today light tripped and comes right back on after clearing. Like most car will not start, smells like fuel, knocks, backfires and such till a hard fault is set and car goes in limp mode.
I also checked the oil level and adjusted just to rule out low oil effecting the AVCS. Has anyone had sucess shimming the sensor or moving it closer? I am starting to think its more of a mechanical problem than electrical. |

Update:
I ran a lab scope on the cam sensor and found a significant amount of noise coming from the sensor as well as very low voltage output from the sensor. I swapped in a known good sensor and the car ran perfectly, pattern was clear and voltage was normal. Replaced the sensor the other day and all has been well for 150miles so far. |

Add me to the list of cars with this P0340 CEL problem. Mine is a 2005 JDM EJ207 engine swapped into a USDM WRX. So far I know this:
1. It threw the CEL after the car sat for 3 days. It would barely start and barely IDLE. Only thing that kept it running was the warmup idle. Above 2kRPM, the engine was perfectly smooth. 2. After swapping in the EJ207, my USDM alternator has made a whining noise that is RPM dependent. It's NOT the A/C idler pulley as I have changed that. 3. I removed the battery side Cam Position Sensor, cleaned the sensor, cleaned the connector with MAF cleaner and applied dielectric grease to the connector. It was better for the first start but I think this was likely due to removing the battery which reset the ECU and cleared the code. 4. Shortly after cleaning the sensor connection, it threw the CEL after I changed my oil and had been charging my iPhone and running the radio for entertainment during the change (~1 hour taking my time) with the key on accessory. The idle again was very choppy but seemed to resolve after starting to drive. I could feel hesitation at 2K RPM for a moment in second gear though. Everywhere else felt fine. Conclusions: A. I theorize that I only seem to have an issue when the charge on my battery is low. I believe my alternator may not be putting out ample voltage due to the whine, especially below 2k RPMs. B.The CAM Position Sensor must be very sensitive to electrical voltage, interference etc. i. I've seen people say they fixed the issue with a grounding mod. ii. I've seen others who have done the grounding mod but have a whining alternator also experience the problem So, what do you guys think? I don't have a multimeter handy at the moment to check things out but it seems like a low battery may be at least part of the equation! I never had this issue on my USDM EJ205 though...Is it possible the sensor only becomes this sensitive to electrical disturbances when the sensor is failing?
