FYI: the new forester comes with autodimming side view mirrors, apart from running wires they look DIY able.

The only thing that would make the mirrors better for me is if they had turn signal lights in them. Other than that, I like them and don't share your complaints. |

Adjusting the mirrors this way is much safer (because it gets rid of the blind spots) but like changing any other habit it can be hard to get used to them in this position initially. Once you get used to the mirrors adjusted this way you won't go back, you don't need the side mirrors to see behind you, but they are helpful in seeing what is beside you. It also makes night driving nicer, cause only the center mirror has a dimmer. When I drive my wife's car I usually just suck it up so she won't have to switch them back, but I definitely move them outwards when I am driving for a longer trip. The trim on the corner of where the a-pillar and dash intersects rattles like crazy when I'm driving on rough roads. Do you guys stuff foam behind the plastic trim or something (the trim just seems to be suspended there and is free to vibrate)?

My car had a rattle there and I used a wooden tooth pick to stop it - I was driving and decided to fix it later - never did.

The Impreza's visibility is vastly better than the VW's, but I continue to adjust my mirror in the improved way. |

Yes, it took me a lot of time. You know you have them adjusted perfectly when a car that's passing you leaves your rear-view mirror and then immediately enters your side-view mirror. The passing car is continuously visible in one mirror or the other, but never both mirrors at the same time.

Wouldnt it be easier and/or safer to adjust them in increments? Im going to try this. Never really thought about eliminating blind spots with side views, and cant wait to stop the blinding lights from trucks behind me.

Yeah after reading the article that was linked here I tried it too and I still think they need to go out a little farther. Definitely going to take some getting used to though.

I don't know. I made the change all at once. The VW's blind spot was so bad that I was highly motivated to make the change as rapidly as possible. It was either that or accidentally side-swipe a car hanging out by my rear fender.

All this mirror talk reminds me why I never sit in the blind spot of other drivers when I am on the highway -- pass or stay back is my motto.
That is defensive driving 101, learned on my motorcycle. |

Have you guys noticed a buildup similar to brake dust on the edge of the rear doors, rear of the handle? It doesn't extend onto the rear quarter panel.
I haven't washed my car for a few months now and I have this very odd concentration of dirt/dust on both sides of the car in the same exact place. The rest of the body is fairly clean. I'm wondering if this is some aerodynamic quirk of the sedan. |

I practice the same. Unfortunately there's too many morons on the rode who love to ride next to your rear doors and maintain the same speed.

Yup. And when I teach my kids to drive, I tell then when switching lanes (for example, on a three-lane highway, if you're in the left-most lane and switching into the center lane) to not pull directly into another car's blind spot because the driver has no way of knowing that you're there.
