2012 break-in period... which oil?
So, I did some looking around in the forum about whether I should be using conventional oil to break in my engine. My boyfriend (who has a rebuilt mustang engine) and his friend (who has an older subi) both insist I should put conventional oil in for at least 500 miles while I break in the engine.
This is what I found here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55512 <-- outdated, turns into discussion on breaking in girlfriends. Does address the rebuilt engine bit though. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2310519 <-- doesn't really touch on the oil bit http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1579077 <-- only about changing oil, not about the type So I thought I'd ask again. Should I use conventional oil for a bit? I have a 2012 Impreza Sport Premium 5-speed, and it has roughly 850 miles on it right now. I'll keep looking, but if you guys have any input that'd be awesome. :3

Read the manual about the break-in period and drive accordingly. |

And there's no way you should put in conventional oil into your '12. It only takes 0-20w synthetic |

the engine is already "broken in" on a bench test anyway, like most modern engines just adhere to the owners manual.

Not to change the subject much, but how many of you are going to wait until the recommended 7500 miles for your first oil change? I'm reading a lot of people are doing their first change at around 3000 mi. I personally plan to do my first oil change @ 3500 mi, then the second @ 7500 mi and then every 5000 mi. I do a lot of short trip driving on a variety of roads including dirt roads. My car also spends a good amount of time idling so I'm not sure if I'm comfortable going 7500 miles between oil changes.

with a quality synthetic you should be fine. I am going to run Amsoil with changes every 15-20k, haven't decided yet. I do mostly all highway driving.

I"m doing my first 4 at 3,800 intervals. Brand new engine, and relatively recent oil formulation. Much cheaper and lower blood pressure than a seized engine. After that, I'll do every 5,000. |
