Original JDM calipers rebuilt again...

But now on my daily driven L sedan along with a '02 WRX rear disc conversion and Goodridge SS lines...talk about stopping power

I'm not saying that you are wrong but why would they send grease packets in the rebuid kit and tell you to put it on the piston seal? Also the Permetex caliper grease I bought listed it to be applied to the piston. I rubbed a little on the piston and some on the inside of the piston boot. I figured it would help condition the boot to heat/stress. I'm a little woried now. I see where you are coming from about mixing the 2 but OEM includes it...

It is supposed to be put in the groove in the boot that circles piston only, not all over the piston.

if that was the case, this thread would not be here and we would have missed all its valuable information as it has developed over the years.

All the other 90% of the DIY threads would have not been made if they had your standard since it would take some one with a phd in mechanics to know all the ins and outs and be 100% sure about everything they have done.

So i say, have an open mind ,do the best job you can, post all the steps you have made, and be ready to revise as you get new and better information..

Bravo to the OP.

that's correct.
You don't want to get any grease on the inside where the brake fluid will be flowing.
The grease is only there to help keep the dust out on the top edge of the piston where the boot sits around the top of the piston.

Well I put it on the piston too. F-it, that sucks. Any major adverse effects? Unclemat I almost pmed you the other day on legacy gt about it but I didnt. I have learned to respect what you say and have always appreciated your advice. Damnit man. Would flushing it again in a month or so help the issue?

Probably not. If you used the supplied red grease, it's not petroleum based, so it should not really "mix" with the brake fluid. I still don't like the idea of smearing it all over the piston (Subaru FSM is clear about where it needs to be used), but I guess if your brakes work, they won't suddenly stop working because of that....

After I made the error the first rebuild time and upon disassembly the second rebuild time I noticed no adverse affects of having the supplied red grease on the pistons.

This last time I rebuilt them (pics at top of page) I cleaned and flushed the calipers throughly along with polishing the inside of the pistons as mine were rusty.

Upon reassembly I only used the red grease on the piston dust cover galley which made sliding it over the piston easier. I also wiped any grease which snuck out from the bottom after placing the cover on. What made this easy to assemble is if you cut a very small corner (like 2mm) of the grease packet and slowly squeeze it out, around and into the piston galley.

As unclemat stated, use brake fluid to cover the pistons before placing and evenly pressing into the calipers.

I've had the 4-pot fronts/WRX rear disc's on my L sedan for a couple weeks and they suprisingly work...incredible (like eye popping, brain hitting forehead brake power...literally) with the L's OEM porportioning valve.

This is a good write-up, and I will be using it in the very near future as I just aquired a 4-pot set up for my car.

I love the search button.

Last summer I tracked my car once, but I noticed that my piston boots were completely shot, cracked and mangled. It's now winter and salty. When I go to rebuild my calipers should I expect my pistons to be rusty and pitted? Can I just replace the pistons if they are really bad?

^ you can often "freshen up" the pistons w/ some fine (1000+) sandpaper

I haven't found a source for pistons- if you find one, post it up

you might give rallispec a shout or Vermont sports- both knowledgeable in the rally scene (and use those brakes)- they may have a source possibly (or a defunct set that they can get the seal from???), like I said I've looked at a lot of schematics over the years and have never seen those seals listed (pistons- yes, other seals- yes, but not the "half" seals)
