Default Is this torque bind?

I have an automatic tranny (1995 Legacy), and i have noticed the infamous "torque bind" problem during slow turns for quite some time. On occasion, the entire car will shudder during slow, tight turns.

Lately, I have been noticing a similar shuddering when i let the car idle in a straight line. This only seems to happen after I decelerate from a higher speed. For example, if I slow down for a red light, almost to a stop and then creep up to the light, the car will shudder violently as the engine idles. If I barely touch the gas, the shuddering will stop.

It feels like some rather heavy rotating part in the transmission is off balance or worn unevenly. That is probably the best way to describe the feeling. Other than that symptom, the tranny never slips between gears, and is very smooth shifting once warmed up. There are no unusual vibrations during regular driving. The tranny has 107,000 miles on it (mostly highway).

Is this possibly related to the transfer clutch problem, which is relatively cheap to repair, or should I expect my tranny to die before long?

How are your tires? If the circumference varies more than about 1/4", it can adversely affect your AWD system and cause the condition you describe. If you can get your car up on a lift, use a thin tape measure and measure the circumference of the tread. A lot of people tend to buy 2 replacement tires at a time, which really screws things up.

Put a fuse in the "FWD" fuse holder, (under the hood, passenger side).

If it cures the studder, your problem may be electronic.

If the studder remains, there is a mechanical problem.

I *think* (not certain at all) that your rear diff is a locked diff, like on my 1990 RX and the BRAT before that. On a sharp turn, the outside wheel has to turn more than the inside wheel, and since the diff is locked, well... they turn together anyway . The result is that "binding" feeling. If it is a LSD or an open diff, I have no idea .

All tires are relatively new, and all four were replaced at once. I'm pretty sure the differential isn't the locked type, I think it's open... this shuddering during turns never occured prior to ~75000 miles. I've been driving for a long long time with the intermittent torque bind problem, so I'm not too worried about that. As matter of fact, the shuddering in turns has been very minimal lately.

It's this new shuddering that occurs when I let the car creep forward in a straight line with the engine idling. This is very intermittent. It just feels like some clutch surface is very uneven or something is off balance in the transmission.
