Default Average mileage per tank?

I am still on my first tank of gas on my XT auto. What is the average range per tank? I have gone about 225 miles and the fuel gauge is at 1/4, so I am hoping that there is a long way to go once you hit E.

The tank is 15.9 gallons, so I should be getting a good 300 miles to a tank or more, although I have been spending way too much time in rush hour traffic lately.

I've been getting 20-21.5 mpg lately in combination city/hwy driving. Been having to gas up at around 300 miles on the odo, usually just about the time the little yellow light comes on...

How accurate is the fuel gauge? Will this last quarter tank go 100 miles or will it go to E and then I have another 50 miles, etc?

Thanks

Hello, I'm new to the forum.

I just got a 2002 Forester, manual transmission. Milage kind of varies on how you drive it. I drove it light when I first got it, and I got a decent 26mpg out of it. The second fill up gave me 21. 3rd tank got me about 24 I think. If you keep the driving light, it will get pretty decent milage. Reving it up a lot will drop the milage down a bit. I'm still too new to the car to tell how much driving variation affects it. Also, it's spring time, so temps are getting warmer and will affect milage as well.

As far as overall milage, I can do low 300's with it before the empty light goes on. Even then, I still only put in around 13 gallons. It's supposted to have something like 2.5 gallons reserve after the light goes on, don't recall. I read it once in the manual.

We average 20 on our XT auto. Highway is usually 24. And that's with the GP moto ecu adding an add'l. 30 hp.

I get 21mpg from my FXT with just over 10,000 miles on it now. Sometimes, you will get in the teens if doing a lot of city stop-and-go driving. You may see up to 24 in ideal highway conditions.

Those turbos are thirsty!

In my experience with my old RS and the new XT, that last 1/4 on the gage goes a heckuva lot faster than the first. It's almost like the 1/2 tank mark on the gage is more like a real 1/4 tank of gas.

Either way, from my and the other's mileage - you should at least start thinking about hitting a gas station as you get to 300 miles on the odo, maybe a little more on a highway-only road trip.

GP moto has been making ecus for the sti and xt since they came out. They just recently perfected the xt one (we were the test car for the automatic tune). You can get their stuff from http://www.rallitek.net/

They are up in Portland, OR.

I drive mostly on the highway to work with a little bit of rush hour mixed in. I've been averaging 22.4mpg so far. I'm pretty happy about that since I get on it every now and then.

That gas tank guage is DEFINITELY not linear. Most aren't. You should ride your FXT until you see the "needs gas" icon light up, and then fill up. Note how much gas you put in and then subtract that from the tank capacity (I think it was 15.9). The reason I suggest this is that, while FXT does tell you the "reserve" gallons (I can't recall offhand (2.3???) , but how many gallons are left when the light is supposed to come on is listed) your FXT could be "different".

It is not a good idea to run a car down to near empty (sludge, etc., gets into tanks over time). I try to put in gas a 250 miles or 275 at the most. Maybe I could go to 300 for all highway. I do wish FXT had a somewhat bigger tank Seems like I visit Mr. Exxon as much as I did with my Explorer! No matter, I love the zoom.

Cheers,

Bob

you may visit mr. exon as often but i'm pretty sure your explorer didn't have the get-up-and-go your fxt does and didn't get 20+ mpg

Default Mileage may vary

I've seen some really wide mileage variances, and most are determined with where we're driving.

If we're playing with STi's on the backroads of Northern California, lost among the redwoods and pristine coastline, then the 'E' light comes on around 200 miles. If taking it really easy, it will last to around 280 miles.

Never seen over 300 miles though. No matter how easy we take it, no power take-offs, no hard shifts or revs past 3500, and still, I'd really like to know how people are getting over 300 miles/tank.

On my stock '02 Forester (non-turbo), I'm doing 300 miles regularly before the light comes on. Even then it's only 13 gallons in. My average mpg so far seems to be around the 23-24mpg range. Unless I'm having some fun down the back roads around my house, I'll stay there. Heavy driving will bring it down to 21mpg but so far no lower. If I'm light with the driving: take off lightly, low rpm shifting (shift around 3000 or less), I can get well over 300 before the light goes on. In fact my first fill-up was a hair under 26mpg, somewhere in the 330's I think. Again, 13 gallons in.

This of course is a bit different than an STi. My non-turbo and manual tranny helps me out a bit off some of you with the XT Forester and automatics.

The turbo seems to really suck some gas. That's odd though cause you'd think it would raise mpg by helping to maintail an optimum air:fuel ratio. Unless you're actually making use of that increased power, you'd think it would actually make the car run leaner than NA in general...maybe the computer just runs more fuel with the turbo

NA: 1 - Tubros: 0

Maybe the computer can be set to run leaner or something.

With 50/50 Hwy/City I am averaging around 20MPG, filling up at around 300miles.
Went on a 400 mile round trip last weekend driving between 70-80 most of the time and achieved a hair over 25MPG.
Some of that with the A/C turned on.
I am most pleased.

Peaty's stats look accurate and are similar to what I've experienced. I've seen these guys claiming they've gotten 27 mpg over on Edmunds. I guess Subaru lied on the window sticker. After all, manufacturers love to understate actual gas mileage right? I'd love to know how some people are calculating it. I have a feeling some of them are driving untill the needle points to "E". Oh sure, that means the gas tank is empty right?( probably an extra gallon in there at "E".)

My F-XT MT cumulative average through over 7K miles is within 1/10th of a mile-per-gallon of matching Peaty's. In other words, nearly identical.

I've gotten 26+ Mpg on two successive tanks of gas. However, I was driving in OR at the time with their better blend of fuel. I ran it close to E and filled up once in Washington (so I know I got the gas up to the top) and once again in Souther Oregon. That was just me cruising at 67 - 68 mph with a load of weekend gear and dogs. I've gotten 25 mpg in California, but a suspect a lot of highway driving and favorable wind conditions helped with that. In general, I get about 21 - 22 in average driving.

Maintaining 75 mph for about 300 miles, I got 25.5 mpg. 25mpg coresponds to around 100 miles the first 1/4 tank of gas. Its a quick way of estimating your gas mileage without using up a whole tank.

lets say you got 80 miles the first 1/4 tank.
80miles * (1/4) = 20 mpg
