Bump for this thread. I'd really like to see some DGM wagons in here, can't decide whether to get new wheels/tires or be cheap and paint the stockers black...

ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE!!!!! this myth is about "baking" forged wheels which is Myth as well..

Powder Coat is electro-statically charged dry paint that is attracted to the aluminum by the negative charge in the metal. Then baked to get the powder to flow out and bake into the grain of the metal. Usually at 250-450*F. Not anywhere close to hurt ANY wheel. Even forged.

Also most wheels that are "powder coated" are actually "Painted" with "wet color" then "dry cleared" with clear powder for durability. Especially factory finishes and custom color matches. There are "pure dry" powder coated colors as well. And they are no more or less durable that wet color + dry clear.. its the dry clear that gives the durability...

Worked in the wheel repair industry for 5+ years from production to sales. Probably close to 35,000 wheels repaired/coated (25+/day and that was a light day).

If any wheel refinishing damaged or hurt the wheel then the insurance companies wouldn't insure cars. OE wheels $300ea on up easily. the company I worked for was doing 250+ wheels a day round the clock, 6 days a week in the slow season. that's 1,500 wheels a week.

The only damage to wheels is in 2 situations:

1. true Magnesium wheels cannot be heated, welded or repaired. They will literally catch on fire. some race wheels have exploded due to extreme temps.

2. true forged wheels: this is where all the Subaru and Evo BS Myths come from: Forged aluminum wheels are a more "pure" aluminum alloy which most aluminum welding rod available is not a perfect match. When the wrong aluminum rod is used to weld up the forged wheel its weakens the wheel. Period. not from powder coating, baking, or any other crap. Won't crack them, weaken them etc. Only if repaired incorrectly.

I finally went for it and painted my stock 2013 WRX wheels satin black with a matte clear. They turned out awesome IMO. I've got 20mm spacers coming this week, then the look will be complete!

Default 04 stock wheels

Hi,

I've got the stock 04 WRX wheels (well, stock for Australia... I think they're called "JDM" 04 in the master wheel thread) and I'm considering many colours, but do really like the stock colour.

I can't find it anywhere, does anybody know what the closest duplicolour would be? I've just read the whole thread (yep) and I'm thinking graphite is the go.

If I had to describe it, I'd say "a little more bronze than a straight silver/steel".

Oh, by the way, this is my first post after lurking for years!

Thanks guys!

Has anyone painted their 2015-17 18" OEM WRX wheels gold? Curious to see how it looks.
Google wasn't much help.

Yes i painted over the wheel weights. These are my winter wheels. Though, there's a good chance I'll do this with the summer wheels.

In the process of fixing up some curb rash on some 08 STI 5 spokes for winter use. Will be priming them and then deciding whether or not I want to plasti-dip or paint. Looking to do a simple matte black. I'll post up some pics when they're done.
