video mount?
anyone find a good place to mount a video camera inside your car? I thought about the rear deck, wondering if it could hold the weight OK during an auto-x?

Top Dog has one on the rear deck, I helped him put it in one weekend. It works out well. Pat are you out there? I think he has pics on his website.

I've recorded the last couple autocrosses with just a standard camera tripod. I sit it right in the middle of the back seat. That gives a good view out the windshield, and you can also see what you are doing (shifting steering, where you are looking, etc). Use the rear seat belts to hold two of the legs, then take the front leg and extend it out to push the top part of the tripod against the back of the seat. I was actually able to push the bottom of the seat cushion out of the way and run the front leg all the way to the floor right behind the center console. If you pull the rear seat belts all the way out they go into "child seat mode" where they will only ratchet in. You can use this feature to hold the back two legs of the tripod very tightly. I've had pretty good results, very little shaking. I have a bigger problem with wind noise, since I run with the windows down.
I hope this works for you. |

Peaty, what did you use to put it on the rear deck? I was thinking of drilling a couple of hole and screwing a metal plate to the bottom (trunk side) of the deck to hold it better.

I have mounted mine just inside my closet. I leave the door open just enough for the lens. I have to keep a little light on (usually some scented candles) since I don't have an infrared lens yet. No big rush since the video I have gotten so far is quite nice.
Uh, is that what this topic was about??? -Mel |

I made a mount that crosses between the two front seats. Just get a piece of angle iron and four "U" bolts and drill out the angle iron so you can connect to the head rest posts. Next you get two "C" brackets and bolt to the middle of the angle iron and now you can manipulate up and down movements. This mount was very strong, strong enough to handle autocrosses and several pineapple road jaunts. Still going strong.

CRZ_MSL, I have a Canon Elura which cost a lot, but they just came out with a cheaper ($750 street) MiniDV called the ZR10 with Analog Line-in. Also, the Sharp View-cams (Hi8) have line-in for about $500 street. You're right, though, it's a pretty rare feature.

Hey guys, I don't have me pics of my camera mount yet but give me a few. I get them on there ASAP, as in right now. I will post with site when I got them on.
I use a compact C-VHS camcorder. The mount makes it sit right in the middle of the back seat, putting the camera right over the back set cusion. Pat |

I have a couple pictures of the mount I made for my Legacy. It's a bit more involved than TopDog's, and puts the camera about 3' farther forward (just behind the front seats). It's basically a Home Depot special - about 15' of 1" angle aluminum (cheap, much lighter than angle iron, works perfectly for this application) a few pieces of PVC to use as spacers, and a bunch of nuts and bolts. My setup also uses a clamp-on camera mount from IO Port Racing, but you could easily build a similar setup with just a flat platform for the camera itself. I bought the IO Port mount to clamp to the rollbar in my other car.
Unfortunately, I have nowhere to post the pictures. If anybody is interested, let me know and I can email them to you. Pat Olsen '99 Legacy 2.5GT 5speed sedan |

May suggest a very cool alternative. If your camera has a "video-in" port, spend $189 on a little lipstick camera. For a sensation of incredible speed, mount it on the bumper; to see more, mount it on the roof. You can mount it anywhere with duct tape, and keep your video camera safe in a box on the floor of the car. Here's a link to one I use on the rally car:
