Default Winter Rally-X Video and Info

Parking lots are fun a couple times, prob is you never know when someones gonna walk on or another car shows up from behind a bank. If you like snow and ice, get yourself to a winter rallyx. It's easy to pull mindless donuts, trying to follow a course actually requires car control.

I'll check out your suggestion. I would like to get into winter rally. My friend and I certainly do more than mindless donuts in empty parking lots. We both have winter tires which make a hell of a difference in control and traction. Sometimes we go hit snowed over dirt roads with many curves and do side to sides on the straight aways. Always making sure nobody is present on the road beforehand and doing a slow drive through first of course. I'm sure I could smoke the average wrangler in a winter rally. I'd love to take part in one if there was something local.

What area do you live? I have to drive minimum 5 hours to get to a rallyx. I only hit up a few a year but totally worth it. Completely different vibe going all out on a closed course. And having a timed event against other competitors makes you push the racing line a little harder every go.

I live near Detroit, Michigan... I just found the website for Detroit Region SCCA... it looks like there is a race on the 16th. I should at least go watch it. I wonder if I can just sign up and drive.

P.S. I just watched the vid you linked to. (I was mobile earlier) That does look like a good/fun challenge.

If your not afraid to giver in the snow, don't think about it. Just sign up. Find out what helmet you need and prep like it's an autox. My first time I was a little nervous, got over it quick and have a blast everytime now.
My gf encourages me to go to them. She says I need a safe place to get it out of my system. If you just go to watch your gonna wish you signed up.

Detroit region welcomes new folks to their events. Being an official SCCA sanctioned event, you'll have to pay for a "weekend warrior" membership, but it's good toward the cost of a full annual membership, which has it's benefits. I highly-highly suggest jumping in and signing up to drive. You'll kick yourself if you just go to watch.....been there myself! The event scheduled for yesterday was cancelled due to too much snow on top of the ice....maybe the 16th will be better. (oops, that was the Saginaw Valley region ice races)

lots of power-on understeer in that vid. driver needs to find out how to use weight transfer, brakes and throttle to make the car dance and not just plow around.

ride along with some good snow drivers at the rallyx, you'll see what you are missing. lots of snow-driving techniques are counter-intuitive, and you need to approach learning them with an open mind. "Sure I could smoke the average wrangler in a winter rally" doesn't qualify as a positive start to the learning curve....

Learning how to really drive in the winter means unlearning a lot of stuff you think you know, and also learning a whole lot of stuff you didn't know you didn't know. Go to the winter rallyx, keep your eyes and mind open and you may be amazed at what you see.

Ice Rally-X is the cheapest way to have the most fun in your car(if you have proper studded tires and have better grip than on tarmac )

I just wish I lived closer to those events.

hey manys, what tires are you running? You've got some monstrous grip on the ice. The events we run only allow for DOT studs and tires...

Video looks awesome josh. surprised how it isn't as shaky as it looked when you were driving. BTW for everyone, I'm driving the red RS at the start of the video.

RB5 Clone, it really does look that like in the video but after driving with him I can say it is a very fast style of driving. He beat me no problem (not saying much) but also Taisto Heinonen driving an audi TT quarto.

Definitely stuff to learn but not quite "beat a wrangler" newb.

Excited about the next one!

Thanks for the video manys. I think I may be making the 3 hour trek north to Lake Poygan on Sunday now! (http://www.fvscc.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1560)

We run legit WRC Pirelli studs.

They are great for fun driving but way slower that homemade studded tires.

@zefy: was referring not to vid @ head of this thread, but to "is snow drifting a motorsport?" vid posted before this thread got split. Search title to see original parking-lot dorifto lameness.
