Default Cams

The cobb cams are a waste of money without the ecu to move up the redline to complament the cams . The emanage mite work with the redline but and i say but you will need the stronger valves so save youre money and get a good turbo kit or other na stuff first .This is coming from the first cobb custumer camsheads swain coat 10.5 ccp head shave ported manifold bigger tb afc nos header cats it ran a 14s it was a waste . my buddys rs ran 13.2 with a 4k turbo kit .

no they are not a waste of money if you want to stay NA. cams are one of the best bang for buck mods you can do. and no you do not need ecu management, or a higher redline, to utilize their power. If you decide to purchase heads down the line, then yes you will need some ecu management, and a higher redline. but NOT with cams. Just search for what Matt Monson has done to his car.

i don't think my cams were anywhere near a waste of money, the car is fun to drive but would never pass emissions, wonder if skywalker can change the misfire sensativity with their flash?

FWIW the emanage works well as a doorstop, too bad it's not good for much of anything else on an OBD-2 car

p.s.: with my cams and my $400 direct port 60 shot i think i will be in range of a 13.2 if i can hold the launch together and as proven over and over, no RS-T is reliable

I'm not but I might as well be. You know that stage of being tired where you missed going to sleep and you then can't fall asleep?

Thats where I'm at, and I feel goofy.

Maybe if I Swain Coat my ass I'll fall asleep faster.

Although I would be miffed to. If you were one fo the first people to buy the Cobb package, it likely means that you had the street cams and street heads. THe club racer cams in stock heads are 3 tenths faster than the stage 2 heads/cams, at a greatly reduced price.

does anyone autocross with the spicey cams? any issues with the loss of low end power? im assuming that it wont be a problem to just keep the revs up, but i would like to hear from anyone that has them.

What loss of low end power? Have you seen my dyno plot? Over 140lb of torque from 2800rpm to redline with a peak of 156. Car starts fine and the cams do not cause any misfires or CEL. The headers cause a CEL, but not the cams. I do want/need a bumped redline, but until I raise the CR, it doesn't really matter. For now I shift at 6200rpm with fuel cut a 6400.

With a good header, you will not be missing any torque (mine is a long tube equalength header). I would imagine that the Cobb offerings, and the normal TWE units would do the same. THe SYMS does not, it reacts the same as the stock manifold.

Spicy cams with the stock exhaust have a bit of a hole, but you won't notice it, unless it is a really tight course becasue the car is geared pretty low (unless you hav an auto, then I don't know how things pan out). Things start happening around 2,500 RPM, and is wailing by 3,500. WHile they are not so nice to be stuck in traffic with (sans a proper header), torque from off idle to 1,500 isn't very usable in an auto x anyway. If you did something wrong you can find yourself below 2,000, but I never got caught out in 2nd gear, only in third before I had the header.

Greg

thanks for the responses guys, Matt yes i have seen your dyno plots i was quite impressed. For the time being i will be sticking with my borla headers, stock cat, 2.25 midpipe, scoobysport axleback. (perhaps upgrade to random tech cat)
im chompin at the bit over here i cant wait to get these cams in the car!!!
as far as raised readline goes:
i spoke with josh at cobb and the impression i got from him was that i should not raise the readline unless i was going to do heads aswell. I have no intention of doing heads, however i was thinking about doing springs and retainers. Then once a reflash is available i wanted to spin up to 7,000. Again after talking with josh he didnt seem to think this was a good idea, so i think i will hold off on the springs and retainers.

as for misfire codes, even the normal cobb cams will cause them. I should know, i have them and have misfire codes

Josh thinks only his way is the "right way".

If you do the cams, its alot easier to do springs than it is to decide to do them later. You do not need to port your heads with spicy cams to get a benifit of raising the redline. The peak with the spicy cams is at redline (according to the Cobb site) which means that 400-500 RPM are going to be quite usable with stock heads and a raised redline, 7,000 might just be a number and not actually worth while to go that high, but unless you have tried it, its just speculation.. Is it worth it as far as the money involved? THats for you to decide, and with reflashes becoming available, you do not need to fork over $1000.00 to raise the redline.

The Spicy cams are faster than the street cams with street heads, Cobb built a motor with the street heads/cams and ran it to 7,000, and found that power drops off a bit that high. Since spicy cams have more high end than stage 2 heads, you will likely do a little better than that motor. Besides, if you are going to have your heads ported, you need some sort of managment anyway. WHy not get it out of the way, your car will be a little faster with it anyway, even with out ported heads.

cheeRS,

Greg
