Default Job seeking resources

Hey all,

I wanted to put together a list of resources that may be of use to people in the job search. A bit of background, I've been looking for work since this summer, left my last position in September. I sought the services of a career counselor to help provide some direction and help on the job search strategies. Along the way I've come across some good resources for resume and cover letter as well as networking. I currently volunteer at a Career Transition Center for one of the Universities in the area and have been able to at least share some of my experience and resources with individuals.

I wanted to share some online resources with the forum here which I've found helpful as I know there are good people looking for work or currently unhappy with where they're at. Hope this is a help to some people!

Resume`

Here is a page I found helpful to see some more current resume`formats. I like these because they include a title and relevant skills in the top half of the page, which helps out with the resume` screener programs.

http://www.resume-magic.com/samples.html

I came across this one over the weekend. I'm in informational overload but there are a TON of tips for how to avoid mistakes or improve a current resume`

http://www.quintcareers.com/resres.html

Cover letter

I found this to be a pretty straight forward overview of how the format of a cover letter should be focused. I'm not a fan of the example on the right hand side for the Administrative position but the explanation is nice:

http://www.manpower.ch/en/advice/the...ter-structure/

And again, information from QuintCareers but for cover letters:

http://www.quintcareers.com/covres.html

Networking

Many people do this but I have to also share that LinkedIn is the easiest way to get an introduction to someone you don't really know. It just helps speed up the networking process by not having to be in person at that moment, but still lets you schedule a time to meet:

www.linkedin.com

Here is an interesting article about management and networking and why it's important:

http://knowledge.insead.edu/contents/Ibarra.cfm

Job Search Tools

O-Net is a great way to get some basic research on a job/career in terms of skills, average pay, education, daily duties and tasks. Kind of general but then you can easily drill down further:

http://online.onetcenter.org/

Great articles from Quint again:

http://www.quintcareers.com/job-seeker.html

Other resources

One of the biggest questions people have asked me in my volunteer work is "what direction do I go?" If you have no idea what you want to be when you grow up, there are a lot of personality tests (Myers Briggs is the most common one)and skills inventories you can take. There are career counseling services out there that range from free to as high as a few thousand dollars that can do these and some go so far as to write your resume` and cover letter for you. I had someone tell me that sometimes you can go to certain types of schools and they may do some of those tests for free if they think you'd sign up for classes. I'm not sure if that's true but it's probably worth trying!

Here is a great book which talks about careers by Myers Briggs personality type. It goes into strengths of MBTI types and why certain careers are good for them. This is an amazon link to show the book but don't buy it. Every library has a copy so just check it out for free (that's what I did)!

http://www.amazon.com/Do-What-You-Are-Personality/dp/0316167266/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266269042&sr=8-1
Ok, that is a ton right there. I hope this helps and gives a start if anyone needs. Mods, I tried to keep things as neutral as possible by not mentioning businesses, institutions etc. as I don't want to be selling or marketing. Let me know if I should edit this at all to comply with the board rules. My goal is to share resources and information and provide all the free stuff (or free alternatives) I could.

Thumbs up Help Wanted:

HEy all just thought I'd give someone a heads-up:

Anderson LOcks ON oakton in Des PLaines just put up a fresh help wanted sign. These guys NEVER have an opening this would be a great Op for someone looking for a viable and lucrative trade.
I don't work there, but I am there once a week or more for my job, and I have NEVER seen a HW sign there before. MAster locksmiths make tons of cash.
I would say most of the employees have been their 10+ years. I been going there for almost 20 years still same guys. good luck.
Anderson Locks
850 E. Oakton Street, Des Plaines - (847) 824-2800

Again I dont work there just helping out.

I saw a few ads/billboards down here in Indiana, advertising for steel haulers. You'd be driving from the Indiana steel mills to local places, Detroit probably being the furthest.

Interested in contract work until something firmer comes along?
