RMIC Landscaping Thread
So I know that there are a number of home owners amongst us, and being so, you probably all know a heck of a lot more about landscaping than I do.
I know a lot of you just recently purchased homes as well. We got a house last year, and I really don't want to have a boring yard that is totally flat and useless. I am starting to draw up designs, but I am going to build our small lawn into a Japanese Garden. I figure that the lawn is too small to do much with besides let the dogs run around, so why not create something that I enjoy looking at. I am planning on something similar to this, but with my scale and alterations: So far the biggest trick is finding plants that will grow in this vegetation. Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting to see what some of you have set up/ see if there are any Guru's around that want to share advice with us all.

I'm looking for some place to pick up dirt for a garden that I want to put in. Does anyone know how prep normal dirt for gardening? Can I just put some manure in it? Or should I buy a ton of top soil? Anyone know where I could get it in bulk?

The only advice I really have is to use as many native plants as you can.
Many native plants only need to be watered once or twice per month instead of a couple times per week. |

Yeah I want to have a pond as well. I think a small yard can be made a lot more attractive with some good features. Ours looks like crap at the moment. Nothing wrong or overgrown, just looks ugly imo.

Here is what the yard looks like now (well old photo but you get the idea). I will measure it out and give the actual dimensions too. |

I saw this thread and was like the Landing Strip rules!
Then I saw what the thread was actually about and was like I don't have a house. |

we painted out concrete last summer and built a planter box so my wife could plant some veggies and such, we don't have any grss at all just the concrete patio. and I had this great idea of building a planter in the corner with the to planter boxes coming off the side of the corner which would have been a pond or fountain of sorts, so far...............the planter box is losing it's weather proofing stain, and the concrete has been all scratched up from our boxer and the ice I'm sure. therefore there will be no pictures haha but my wife and I just got too lazy to try to build the rest
oh and Jon that pond/creek thing is badass!! very nicely done! |

Jon,
How often do you have to add water to the creek? Also Mush, I hear that LDS Members like to do service for their neighbors right? |

Well we can pull my sod and put it in your yard if you want. You can have all of the bushes and stuff too.
