1996 Land Rover Discovery or 1996 Toyota 4Runner
Does anyone know anything about either one of these vehicles? I am looking at two used ones (1 discovery and 1 4runner) both with 100k miles, both are the same price from different private parties at $7500. I already know the Land Rover would be nicer pretty much in every category and especially with the V8 but I worry the Land Rover will be a lot more expensive to maintain in the long run especially having over 100k. What do you guys think? Discovery or 4Runner? Thanks in advance for any comments:

My last vehicle before the WRX was a Discovery. I loved driving it. It rode smooth, the steering was pretty tight, suspension good and I never had a problem with it in 2.5 years. Gas mileage sucked, but that's to be expected. I had it new, so I'm not sure on the maintainance issues. I can say that my parents bought a Defender back in the early 90s, the thing now has over 200,000 miles on it (many off road) and have NEVER had to do any maintainence beyond tyres and basic checkups.
All this said, I know nothing if the Toyota. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions - I'll be happy to check with my dad if need be. |

Toyota's got the Land Rover beat on reliability and maintainance. It's hard to beat a Toyota. The only way you can keep a Land Rover in decent shape is to take it out and flog it, like going mudding and stuff like that...

My parents friends bought a discovery couple years back, probably an 02
They went through 2 engines in 40k miles, unfortunatly only one was under warantee. Another friend of mine had his discovery in the shop every couple months, and one time I was in it when the rear diff. busted. Go with the toyota for reliability, despite the LR's off road ability |

I had a 01 Disco 2 it was a nightmare to own, had it about 6 months and got rid of it. The dealer replaced the tranny twice, and still did not go into reverse. It leaked oil, had an electrical problem, made them take it back with 2700 miles on it thats how much we got to drive it. Go for the Toyota.
