Default EJ207 Refusing to Run

Hey guys,

Here is my setup:

Stock 2002 WRX wiring harness
Version 8 EJ207
JDM Version 8 ECU
6 Speed Transmission
IA Performance AVCS Harness
Version 8 ECU (Romraider, ECU flashed base map @ 91 octane)

Just swapped in my EJ207 this weekend and am having trouble getting it to run. I first went ahead and confirmed spark and fuel by pulling a plug and laying it on the motor while I cranked it. While/after cranking, strong fumes of fuel are present and I can see the spark on the plug. I then checked compression just to be sure and I'm, in fact, seeing 120 PSI.

The one thing I wasn't able to check that I'd like to is the ignition timing, which I think is the problem, but I'm not quite sure how to do this. I thinking it's 180 degrees out? I was able to successfully write the map to the ECU using my tactrix cable, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I would expect some kind of sign of ignition like a pop, or backfire or cough if the timing was even remotely close, but I'm not.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss. I'm SO close, it must be something simple.

Thanks for your help guys!

Are your coilpack plugs on the right way? White in the front, black in the back.

Yes sir, I'm almost 100% certain. I noted the colors of the connectors.

How did the romraider happen? Did you flash this before checking if the engine actually runs?
Are you the second owner of this swap and the previous guy did the romraider? Maybe he did a timing belt too? Did you do a timing belt?
If you flashed it without ever running the engine, did you confirm that the flash went all the way through, you did not brick the ECU?
What is the part number printed on the front sticker of your ECU?

I plugged in the two green connectors under the dash, inserted the "jumper" piece into the black plug that came with the Tactrix cable, and used my Tactrix cable to retrieve the factory map on the Version 8 ECU and burn the map below with ECUFlash.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4rU...it?usp=sharing

I did flash the ECU before checking if it actually runs. I also pushed the stock map I pulled off the Version 8 ECU back onto it and attempted to start it, same results though.

I am the first owner of this swap, just put it in this weekend.

I did the timing belt prior to installing the engine.

When flashing with ECU flash, I performed a Test Flash before actually flashing the ECU, both were successful.

The part number on the ECU can be seen below in this photo (sorry, bad photo, but should give you the information you'd like to see):

I plan to pull the timing covers off and double check the timing. Good compression (120+) tells me there is a good chance this isn't a timing issue.

Thanks guys!

Also to be noted is that a brand new Gates timing belt was put in place with all marks checked out and lined up properly.

I'm curious as to whether or not we connected the ground wire to the manifold on the driver side. I was reading somewhere that this could potentially keep the car from running. I will check on this tonight.

I will also be performing a leak down test this evening.

I definitely need to unplug the EGR connector on the inlet tube. Otherwise, I believe everything else looks good. The last part looks to be special cases.

Come to think of it, I noticed a ground that is missing on the manifold.

Careful trying to start and run the car with missing grounds you can get all sorts of stray voltage running around. I cooked a MAF a long time ago because I missed a ground after my 6-speed swap (the person who took it off did not stick around for assembly) and the car barely started, was super rich and was just not right. after fixing the ground I found that the MAF had shorted out.

Check all your other grounds as well while you are at it.

Check ur ecu for problems. Try to get another ecu from a friend or some one else and try to fire it up. That way if it turns on u know u have a fried ecu. If not them u have to keep searching

Turns out fuel lines were swapped. (Being there was slight difference.) it lives now according to Jacob, but we'll see if any other issues arise.
