Default CT state tax?

Just a general question about the CT state tax. I know NY is about 8.9% and MA is about 5%. Can anyone tell me what CT is?

Sales Tax is 6%. Is that what you are looking for? We are also blessed with an Income Tax and Property Taxes (which are determined by towns/cities individually).

Yeah, property tax sucks. Finally learning what that's all about since purchasing a car.

yup....I found that out about 4 years ago. I thought registration was so much cheaper than California until I got the bill from my town tax collector. Oh well... life goes on, part of what I call I want to play I have to pay...

Thanks guys. Reason for asking is because I'm planning on purchasing a 2010 or possible 2009 Subaru Impreza. Wanted to know where it would be cheapest to purchase one.

It doesn't matter where you buy it. It's your state of residency that they look at...

You can buy it in CT, but if you live in NY then they would still charge you NY tax rate.

That depends on his state really. That's the way it works in MA, as they charge you sales tax when you register a car for the first time in your name. NY may not do that.

I can't imagine NY letting CT keep the tax. I can tell you the opposite (buying in NY, registering in CT) works as expected: CT gets paid.

I can tell you NY has sales tax. Where I used to live it was 10.25%...... 6% is nothing in comparison.

I bought a car in MA and a car in OH and I am a CT resident. Both times CT tax was paid. Most states reciprocate with the sales tax. Also I almost bought a car in NY and I asked the dealer and he said the same thing. CT sales tax was getting charged. As other people said you pay the tax rate of your state you are residing/registering the car.

Cheers

Nick
