Cheapest source for Version 5 struts
Calling all GC suspension guys: I'm trying to find the cheapest source for Version 5 struts.
I know the market value of v.5 struts skyrocketed a few years ago and its hard to find em on the cheap. However it is my hope that somebody cruising the boards can point me in the right direction. Unless, that is you can recommend a comparable strut to the v.5 that I should consider. (kyb agx adjustables?) Thanks for your help Joe My work so far: http://www.subaruwrxparts.com/gc8-suspension.html http://www.get-primitive.com/

Another vote for the AGX's.
AGX's with prodrive or eibach springs work very well. If you want to spend some more Koni inserts are pretty sweet as well. |

I have SPT's st/sp's and I like them. I got them during an SPT sale from a nasioc vendor for 571 shipped. I wanted what you're after but I saved $$$ for an upgrade in Hp. Anyway the P1 springs with the AGX are also good from what I've read.

AGX's are nowhere near comparable to the v5's. I've had both and the AGX's don't even come close to the v5's. (Both with SPT springs).
I got mine from www.mastrowrx.com |

In what way do you say they're better Opie???
I've had both on my old GC6 and I liked the AGXs better. I like the fact you can adjust them. If they made an inverted V5 style strut w/AGX adjustablility then we'd all be golden. -mykr. |

I just don't think the AGX's are dampened quite the same, the v5 are always firm but smoother than the AGX's over the bumps, the AGX's seemed to be more jarring of a ride. Your right though, the adjustability feature for price is right.
I "liked" the way the car felt with the AGX's...with the v5's I absolutely "love" the way the car feels and handles. Just personal preference I guess. |

Yeah I drove a RS a year ago or more with Version 5 suspension and was totally in love with the handling.
However cost, availablitity and the glowing recommendations of kyb's has put them on the consideration list. Any more info on those koni inserts? How do they work- do they replace the dampners in the stock unit? Joe |

The konis use your old struts for the lower spring perch. You hack apart your old ones bolt in the inserts and reinstall. The labor may cost more because of the fabracation and the inserts cost more. The ride is better from what people say but I'm gonna stick to my AGX's till I start making a little more money. The konis also benifit from more adjustibilty. They have a dial that can be set from stiff to soft where as the AGX's only have 4-8 settings.

IIRC, You can get adjustable ones from rallispec as I posted but it's going to bite your wallet.

Rallispec and www.subaruwrxparts.com have great prices and I think those are two of the companies that will have the best Tech knowledge. Dave at Rallispec and Brian at Exeter can both answer just about any question. Exeter also sells the AGX sets, so you can shoot comparison questions his way, too. (He actually used to have them on his car for years, but just swapped them out for super-stiff STi Tarmac struts and springs.)
Anyway I'd take the V5/6 struts over the KYBs any day of the week. Yes the AGX are adjustable, so if you like that, go for it. But they're just not as well-built a strut, from all the reviews I've read over the years. I did buy mine before the big price jump. In October of 2001 it was $2-225 to buy a full set of four brand new, and now it's $600+. It was SoA saying that the previous cost was a "pricing error." FYI, the V5/6 struts are NOT the same as the SPT ones. The SPT struts are not as good. And just a suggestion: the struts were the same on the STi Ver.5 and Ver.6, which is why you often see the 5/6 designation. They're the same strut. However, the springs were different between the two models. If you can find a set of Ver.6 springs, the rates are a bit higher, and several members have told me that they ride better than the 5s do. (I have 5s.) Stiffer around corners, but actually a smoother ride over bumps. Supposedly they feel better-matched. And do yourself a favor and invest in some STi Group N strut tops. I haven't bought them yet, but everyone in the known universe says it's a very wise move. -S2- |
