At what vehicle speed is this happening? From the few comparative tests I have seen of the older Xi2 it was not at the head of the class in resisting slush-planing, but it was not horrendous either.

Anywhere between 20-30 I guess....any speeds over 30~ will obviously slide and have poor steering regardless.

It's just a big difference in snow vs slush.

Snow in general has a lot more traction then slush, regardless of tire design.

I wish we had gotten enough winter weather here I could have tested out the XI2's in more then just freezing fog. maybe next year...

Default All Season Tires

Does anyone run all season tires? I had some Goodyear Eagle GT tires that I felt handled really well on my old VW GTI.

I'm looking for a tire that can handle Utah snow and summer with some occasional track time. Any suggestions?

Look at the thread title. Also, I highly doubt a single tire would be able to do those three things.

good luck with that man all seasons are like the jack of all trades in my opinion, They can do it all but not very well. You should use a dedicated summer/track tire and a good snow tire or performance winter tire. If you use a all season on the track you run the risk of overheating them and getting bad/numb feedback as well as destroying the tire. They weren't made to go balls to the wall on a track. Trust me you'll end up ruining them within a couple hard miles of track use but it really depends on how you drive. If by some miracle you do end up getting the best of all worlds please post it! Id love to run one set of rims all year! good luck!

Default Tires

Thanks for the feedback.

Do you use your summer tires for tracking? How do they hold up and how often do you need to replace them?

I use mine for tracking and they hold up pretty well. I used z1 star specs by dunlop and i got 20 laps at road Atlanta plus the trip back to upstate NY and a full summer out of them. Im going to put on my old stock ones this summer until i can find another set to replace them but how they hold up is mostly up to how you drive. the only noticeable wear is on the very sides of the front tire tread where it looks like little pieces have been chiseled out because of the understeer. The new z11's are out by dunlop and those are supposed to be better in wear characteristics and handling so im waiting for those. I would ask the same question in the summer tire sticky because they might be more knowledgeable on the subject as far as what would be your best bet. Good luck!

For an 04 Wrx sedan, what would you recommend Sparco Terra 16x7 or drag dr-31 17x8? Both would have studded winters. Also what tire would you recommend?

If you want the best studded then it is hard not to choose Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7. The only problem is if you can afford it.
16x7 (or 6.5) should be enough for winter in Alaska.

I bought a set of WRX rims (I believe from a 2005 WRX) and the tire size on there currently is: 205/55R16

One of my winter tires developed a sidewall bulge, so I need to order to winter tires.

Quick question: Is there any way to get a narrower tire that will fit my rims? I'm not sure how much leeway there is for different sized tires

There's some leeway. 2005 WRX rims are 16x6.5" IIRC (should be stamped out on the rim somewhere). What you have to look at is the specs for the tires you are looking for (usually on the manufacturer's site or a site like TireRack) and see what rim width the tire size you are looking at will fit.

For example, I am currently running the Falken Azenis RT615K in 255/40/18 on my factory 18x8.5" rim. Looking at the specs from Falken (http://falkentire.com/tires/car-tires/azenis-rt615k), these tires will fit on rims from 8.5" to 10" wide, so I'm OK. If I wanted to go wider, say to a 265/35/18, I would need at least a 9.0" wide rim, according to Falken.

So just look at the specs for the winter tire you're looking to buy and see what kinds of widths will fit on a 6.5" wide rim.

My US$ 0.02.

Never too early to get a winter set ready, I got a question here.

I have a 2013 WRX and I just got a set of 06 LGT rims (17x7), I'm looking at 205/50/17 for the size, the price difference between 205/50/17 and 215/45/17 is about $150 different. Would I be fine running on 205s. Also I know that narrower tires are better for winter driving.

Obviously LGT wheels will not fit an sti I think but I bought "wheels" (wheels have rims) 17×7 with lm60 blizzak 205/50/17.

So if u r going with a 17×7 wheel the 205/50/17 will be perfect!!

So I am making a plan for my 2012 WRX winter set up and just want to verify with you guys before I pull the trigger. I found a set of 2005 WRX 16x6.5 rims and am planning on wrapping them with some blizzak ws70's. My question pertains to the ideal size of tire: Tire rack suggests 215/55R16 for 16" rims on the '12 WRX but they do not offer the WS70's in that size. The closest I could find are 205/60R16. Will this slight sidewall height increase be ok on the '12? The speedometer variation appears to be negligible...

I wanna toss this in here. Sorry that it is currently not relevant to the direction of the discussion.

I have an 07 WRX with a front only, 04 brembo swap. It was always told that there were no 5x100 steel wheels that cleared brembo calipers.

This however is not true. There is a company local to me who sells steel wheels and repro's to local shops as wholesale. The company is R.H. Scales Co. The model of the wheel is X41575 (i will verify). They are a 17" black steel wheel with the correct hub and bolt pattern. I have also verified that these DO fit over my brakes, without spacers.

Pics to follow when i get home.

Not sure if this is the best place for this question, but I'll give it a try. I have an extra set of summer tires, unmounted, I don't have room to keep them anywheres inside, any suggestions on what I should do to them. Tarp over them? Let them just sit? I live in NY, so the weather varies pretty well. Just looking for some thoughts

I have a question, I'm looking to pick up a a set of steelies and some winter tires for my WRX. 16" with 205/55 R16 was recommended by the TireRack site, this is probably what I'd go with, but do I need the TPMS? Can I just run them with the light on on the dashboard all winter then in summer when I put my summers back on with the TPMS, will the light go away again?

Thanks in advance.

Yes u will be fine without the tpms but in some state laws require them upon dot inspections...etc.

So what happens when I put the old rims/tires with the TPMS in them? Will the light go off shortly after putting those back on or is there something special I'll need to do to sync them up?
