Default 06 WRX Transmission VS. 02 WRX Transmission?

Hey guys. I currently have an 02 WRX with 75,000 miles on it. As everyone knows, the 02 transmission is one of the worst transmission ev4r!!!!111one. Ok, maybe not, but it sucks. I have never been able to shift into 1st gear unless I was completely stopped unless I rev the piss out of it and double clutch. Yes, I know the transmission was SORT OF designed to do this to keep you out of first gear but damn, it is a PITA. Yes I have changed fluid, blah blah blah. Now, at 72,000 my 4th gear synchro is starting to take a dump on me as well. Lets forget about my transmission problems.

I am planning to purchase an 06 right around the time that the 07s start hitting the lots. I know, I know, STI 6 spd FTW win, but how have the WRX transmissions progressed over the years. What can I expect out of an 06 WRX 5 spd?

Thanks,
Rob

06=

dual cone first gear synchro (better to get into first)
different clutch pull vs. push or vise versa I can never remember
currently NO aftermarket clutches available
wider gears than your 02 but same as 04+.
final drive is suckier and harder on your gears vs 02-05

Should I look into an 05 instead?

I don't know. Seems like many people have this problem. I tend to believe in most cases people are not properly double clutching or it has been abused so the syncronizer no longer functions as well. If you are just above syncro point it should slip in like-a-glove.

Traded my 02 in for an 06.
I never had any problems with the 02 tranny at stage 2 for 90k.
I like the 06 better, feels smoother, and definately easier to shift into first when coming to a stop.
My 2 cents.

lol no...

Once you start modding the transmission will be just as likely to go as an 06. The the better power, handling and braking the 06 delivers is worth it. If you want to drive it hard and mod it you'll have to upgrade the transmission...

Oh and first is still hard to get into. I dunno how much harder yours is but dont expect it to feel like a honda Double clutching into first and second is always a good idea though..

Well, if I'm going to be doing a lot of double clutching I'm going to have to get a quiter exhaust

I don't expect it to be like a honda. I do expect to be able to be basically in standstill traffic on the express way and even though I'm rolling about about 1-2 MPH, still put the car in first gear. I cannot do that as it stands. I can do it at just about any speed if I double clutch but with my exhaust it is obnoxious to do anywhere, much less in heavy traffic. The 4th gear synchro only grinds when I shift into it from 4.5k+ in 3rd. I plan to change the fluid and then avoid 4th gear until I get my new car in 6 months or so.

Maybe I should get an RA gearset right away before I start modding? I'm not loaded and I know that is expensive, although I don't know HOW expensive.

If I rev match, my tranny goes into first at 20mph no problem. I have 10k on my car, and it shifts smoother then the day I bought it. Stock tranny fluid etc.

Well i can shift into 1st at 25mph but i never said i let the clutch engage at 25mph.

Being able to downshift into 1st while moving faster than 2mph is extremely useful in certain situations such as approaching a speed bump (crawling over a speed bump in 2nd gear isn't fun) or approaching a stop sign (i don't recommend "rolling" through a stop sign but having to stop for 3 seconds to pop it into 1st gear sometimes get annoying). Any situation where you'll be slowing down to below 10mph but not stopping completely is where being able to downshift into 1st while moving becomes extremely useful. I suppose you could stay in second but then you have no power to accelerate quickly.

However it really does take alot of practice to properly pull it off (it takes double clutch with a possible heel toe maneuver if i'm braking at the same time). Been doing it regularly for the last 2 years with zero issues and what's reputed to be one of the most slippery gear oils.

But like i said, i downshift into 1st at 25mph but i don't engage the clutch at 25mph.

Many of the situations you mentioned are why I would like to be able to do it. I am not an experienced double clutcher, but I can do it. And it will get me into 1st at 20-25 MPG, IF I WANTED IT TO. The problem is, it requires me to rev up above 4k and hold it for a second or two. This is something I don't like doing in stop and go traffic on the freeway.

My 05 WRX will slip into 1st no problem below 15mph or so... I can get it to go into gear higher if I rev match. But I hardly ever downshift to 1st unless I'm coming to a complete stop or moving at a speed below 10mph or something.
