Question Overboosting in 5th Gear

2011 WRX stage 1.

I tried to find a general questions thread, but no dice.

The car runs great and usually peaks out at around 16.8-16.9psi in third gear any given day, with the occasional 15.5+ on an off day. I figure this is fine since it's not exceeding the advertised 16.5+-.5psi. What concerned me the other day was having the AP plugged in and showing boost, I got up to 17.9 psi. Scared to death I was cooking the turbo, I slowed down. I thought it was just a fluke, until it happened again a few days later. Needless to say I'm watching the pedal in 5th now. I've noticed that it only occurs when I'm WOT in 4th until 5200rpm, and then shift to 5th, and go WOT again.

I understand that this may be useless info without a datalog, but I'm apprehensive to do that kind of speed without the ability to safely do so. If it's absolutely critical I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for any help!

did you throw a po244 overboost code? if not i wouldnt worry about it. your car will let you know if you hit the boost threshold. my tune is for about 20 psi and i see 22 psi somedays.

If you are about +/- 1 psi of the map target, this is generally just fine. You will sometimes see higher boost levels in higher gears. The engine control unit has a protection feature where it cuts fuel if you boost much too high (above a limit that would generally be a problem as determined by a map). Regardless, try to get a data log as described by the following video (if you can do safely). We can check to see what your boost control looks like and if you need to switch to the low wastegate map or not.

If you have an AP v2, the best thing to is to get a 3rd gear data log (see the video posted earlier in this thread). Keep in mind you will generally see higher boost in higher gears.

Can you list all your mods? What map are you running? Do you have a version 1 or version 2 AccessPORT?

Sorry for the long delay: here's a link for my 3rd gear 2000-Red:
3rd Gear Run

I have a log of of the overboosting in 5th, but it's only to 17.4psi. It's at line 186 on this link.
5th Gear Run

If there's any issues with viewing, let me know. I'll fix asap. Thanks again!

I don't see any issues here. You will hit higher boost levels at WOT in higher gears, but as long as you are within 1 psi or so of the target, this is not a problem.

It's worth mentioning that it isn't uncommon to see somewhat of a spike as the temperature gets colder.

That would explain a lot, actually. Good to know.

Funny, I just did some data logging and went WOT in 5th and hit 17.5 psi and I got scared. I have never heard the turbo spool like that. Kinda scares me to think that the TP stage 1 tune is made for 18psi lol...

Yes, as you modify and the boost increases, the car does take on a slightly different tone. It happens. Don't be scared, embrace it. lol

My friend had a 09 STi with stage 2 that through an overboost code in 5th. Unhooked the battery for a while then reflashed it and didn't happen again.
