This thread has really sparked my interest. I found a Holset HX35 somewhat locally to me, and I can get it for $200.

But after looking at other pictures, the turbo seems quite a bit different then what I have seen in this thread. The inlet seems very small compared others in here, this is what I mean:

Is this the wrong turbo?

either that HX35 is suffering from a major case of "shrinkage" or that isn't a HX35

Best thing to do would be to rotate the turbo and get a bent tube to make an intake. You will have little to no luck finding one that bolts on to the stock location

Don't think so. The vgt setup is very involved and I don't know if you can adapt it to run without a piggyback controller.

The only one I have seen is one on YouTube but it's still in the works on the video.

I guess theres not a big enough market for a standalone controller.

Has anyone run into an issue with a boost leak at the compressor housing? My original chra didn't have a compressor housing o ring, but my new chra came with one. It seems my retaining clip isn't seating properly due to the o ring. Does everyone's have an o ring between the comp housing and backing plate?

My hx35 has the same thing going on. Mine does not have an O-ring. A quick google search revealed this is normal and I also contacted Tim @ Tims Turbo about it and be said its normal.

You could honestly control it with an arduino, some trans/resistors/diodes/controls/etc if they arent attached to the turbo and some code.

I found it, and it looks like a quality kit from what i can tell.
Im going to track the dude down and order one. Going to try a little experiment... gonna attempt making a twin scroll t4 exhaust housing for it on my new CNC mill at work. Between the twinscroll housing, twinscroll equal length headers, and this controller, I should be able to see some positive boost around or below 3k RPM Im hoping....

I wish you the best of luck as that sounds VERY INVOLVED. Please take pictures and report back though! Intriguing idea to say the least. Also, if going through that much trouble just for the housing, consider a low mount as well. That should basically guarantee you hit boost around 3k

I cant get away with a low mount setup around here - itd get destroyed in no time flat, plus i dont like the idea of an electronic pump to pump the oil back to the pan.

ok so I just got tuned on my rotated hy35w setup. I welded the wastegate shut and am running a tail 44mm wastegate with unequal length headers and 3" down pipe with full 3in exhaust.

the only thing is the car really dosent get going until like 4k when i start seeing about 15psi or a little more. I will be switching to a set of equal length perrin headers with a rotated t3/t4 uppipe from them here soon. I am also looking at switching up to an HX35 7 blade from tims turbo with the timsturbo 9cm housing.

as far as spool goes would it be a good idea to go up to the HX35 with this housing or stay with the hy35?

What's your setup? I got a hx35 on my 2.1l stroker and it spools a tad faster than yours

Bumping an old thread because I'm excited to finally get her up and running!

Hx40w 7blade. Still need to adjust the abs and power steering reservoir for space for an intake pipe. Had to cut down the actuator, thread the rod, and make a bracket. It works, but since its not opening till 25psi+, I'm going to try and fab up a bracket to get my old vf40 actuator to fit for break in.

What are the redeeming aspects of this turbo? You got turbos like gen 2 GTX35s, PT6466s, Xona turbos laying down ridiculous numbers while becoming more efficient, have smaller footprints, have track record for reliability, and are simple to install. Just want to be edumacated

Same reason people buy older cars vs brand new ones, haha. Price. Mine was $250 after the rebuild, I got it off a local bulldozer. My rebuild was a whopping $35 and some time.

Edit : Not really an apples to apples comparison either. Xona cheapest on FP's site is ~$1800 and 75lb/min, GTX3582 gen 2 is ~$1900 and 82lb/min, and the PT6466 is ~$1900 and roughly 90lb/min.

Challenge. Your not running this frame without employing some fabrication and problem solving skills. Obviously there are better performing modern solutions but thats not the point. I wish my Holset would esplode, Ill throw that bish in the gutter and go buy another. But it wont, because its Holset....
