UTEC Staged or custom?
I'm contemplating getting a UTEC in the not-so-distant future. These are the performance mods that will be under the hood:
Perrin Short Ram Intake Perrin Crank Pulley Perrin Up Pipe Perrin IC Hoses TurboXS Stealthback Exhaust w/ High Flow Cat The question is, can I run these under the stage 2 map? Or will it have to be a custom setup?

The pully has no bearing on any map... As for the intake, that makes things to say the least... Interesting. But you could get by with just a Stage 2 map, however I would think again about keeping the intake if your not going to tune for it.

Can you expand on that a little bit. I know the Perrin Intake doesn't mess w/ the MAF sensor. Will it still affect tuning possibilities?
Also, Stage 2 doesn't include an up pipe. Will it run ok with an up pipe? |

So we hacked the air intake making it a short ram. Still no good, better still but still got turbulent flow AND your getting very hot air with a short ram air intake. This is a problem as hot air is alot less dense and you end up getting less air than the stock box. I personally will never get a modified air intake again on any car. I had one on my 996 and it basically did the same thing. I would only consider a solution that was built off the orginal airbox (slightly better opening etc etc). I just have to believe the car manufactures do their design homework. Once I removed the intake and put the stock back on (plus a BMC filter) it took me about 3 data runs to get a new map that worked pretty darn well for me, before that with the intake 3 weeks and still no solution without knocks at some point. nathan |

Good info. I don't plan on upgrading my turbo anytime soon, so hopefully that doesn't apply.
I'd really like to know if anyone is using Stage 2 UTEC w/ an up pipe. I saw some fuzzy experiences over on wrxhakers using a map tuned for stage 2 + a PDE up pipe. I wonder why TurboXS doesn't include the up pipe until Stage 3? Anyway, would there be any reliability issues running the map with extra parts? |

The Perrin intake and TurboXS shorty supposedly do not exhibit the same problems as the other intakes whether it is the stock or upgraded turbo. I just ordered a TXS shorty and am running a VF30 in my stage 4 so we will see if this is true or not.
As for why TXS does not add a uppipe until stage 3, well when they came out with stage 1 and 2 they only produced a turbo back, no uppipe. So when they came out with the uppipe it was more logical to create a Stage 3 and add the uppipe to the turbo back in that form. If they would have added the uppipie to stage 2 and still called it Stage 2 there would be confusions as to when someone said I have "TurboXS Stage 2" as to weather that was with or with out uppipe. I would look at Stage 3, as you are closer in mods to that, but that is just my opinion. The stock 3 map (on initiall inspection) has some timing pulled in the 100 TPS range and looks to have more fuel added so it may provide a little more cusion to start with. Though it is set up for 17psi so you may want to knock that down a tad, but that is your choice. |

Granted stage 3 would be an excellent choice. Then I'd have to find the other 1.2k for the TMIC and the full turboback. Ah, what's money if you don't spend it?
I'll be very curious to hear of your experiences w/ the TXS shorty ram. Do tell. |

Well since you have the steath back which is just the turbo back minus the muffler you are really only the TMIC short of the Stage 3. The muffler adds little more then sound, the stock one is really not that restrictive. And even though you are running the stock TMIC you are running the upgraded IC hoses so lets for the sake of agument say that splits the difference on the upgraded IC. Go look at the Stage 4 maps w/ and w/ out the TMIC, last time I looked they are identical. If anything the stage 3 map may be a little on the rich side. One thing to realize is that when you vary from the preset Stage you will more then likly have to make a few tweaks here and there to get things where they should be and that is what the UTEC is for. Heck even if you stick hard and fast with the Stage package some tweaks will be needed as every car is different.
I will hopfully have the shorty by the end of next week they had a little run on them so there is a small back order. |

Thanks for the insight. When I get my UTEC I hope I can can ask you the many questions I'm sure I'll have.
