Anybody running an EWG on stock turbo?
Any regrets? The big issue I heard is the CRAZY noise... right now, I run a COBB TBE, Gruppe-S headers and no sound insulation... the sound is perfect... not sure if I want to go TOO much louder... a bit louder under WOT would be ok, but nothing too extreme.

It sounds good and makes a huge diference on the VF39. Do a search as its been covered quite a bit on the STi chapter. It's also good if you choose to go with a stock turbo replacement in the future such as a FP Green etc. I've been wanting to go EWG on the 39, but hmmm..

I had my EWG on my car back when I had the 39 on it (WRX though, not STi) and it made that turbo perform at an entirely different level. Yes it's loud when it opens but in a good way
Fuka, hurry your a$$ up and get one already! You know you love it! |

You can DL a lot of video and audio clips of a EWG on a VF39 on youtube. Thats what I did Sounds aggressive when it opens up.
SubaruBen has a EWG on his FP. |

i am running ewg setup on the stock turbo (vf30) for now. there is nothing negative about running an external gate except the noise (for some). you will have better boost control, and it will give your turbo a higher volumetric efficiency which = more power if tuned. i say go for it, and don't look back especially if you plan to go to a bigger stock location turbo in the future.

I'm running EWG on my car...I love it. I have a TD-05 20G (not stock turbo) but I did a before and after and I definitely like it WAY more with the EWG. The nice thing is you can easily drive around town mellow and never have the EWG open up...but when it does...bad azz!! My fuel mileage has actually improved as I take it easy more often now not wanting to upset drivers around me. When you pass someone with the EWG open it can definitely startle them.
Spooled, pricing is $350USD for just the uppipe. It is $600 USD with the Tial wastegate and up-pipe together (and dump-pipe). |

Jamie, how much did you put down on the dyno with the new 20G? How much boost you running?

Is there any benefit if you run and EWG but plumb it back into the DP so it's not quite as loud? I guess it would be expensive though.

lots of people in lower mainland have ewg... some just not on nasioc
there is less advantage to it if you run a turbo without excessive backpressure. The *relative* gains are much bigger on a small turbine turbo (with excess backpressure). In other words, on a td04 or vf39 etc. you will have a bigger "relative difference" than for example a turbo which isnt EGBP limited (like say a turbo with a bigger hotside). as well, most tracks (i.e. mission) will black flag you... |

For the road courses there are noise limits and you can potentially get black flagged. I thought for sure I would down in Seattle but didn't. Another car (STi) had an EWG tapped into the DP, although it IS quieter it's not by too much. I'd rather have it dumped to atmosphere.

if they noise limit test you on the straight (which they can), they will give you a warning. If they happen to not do it, then you are fine.
Just because they didn't doesn't mean they won't/can't |
